Effective breathing in Hot Yoga can transform your practice, deepen your poses - but wait - much more than that, it can make a spectacular difference to your life!

This 19 minute video gives you the low-down on something we all do but often take for granted.

And who could blame you? For most breathing is an automatic function. So what do you have to do, what techniques can you use, to take your awareness to your breath and improve your yoga practice and your life.

Years of emotional baggage and stresses take their toll and you can develop habits that are not supporting you in living the best life that you can.

This video will help you understand:

  • How breathing causes a physiological calming of your system which in turn has you feeling less stressed
  • How to bridge the Pranayama breathing exercise at the beginning of class to ensure proper breathing technique for the rest of class
  • How to know what noises you should be making in order to be breathing correctly
  • How to feel more vital, generally!
  • The scientific principles that you can use to fill your lungs more deeply than you ever have before

The techniques and skills described link beautifully with the posture techniques described in the first video of this series (”Elbows in your back pockets”).

Breathing is a skill you can work on, and use to enhance every aspect of your life. Get conscious, get the best out of every breath!

Hi Gabrielle, thanks for this wonderfully informative video. I fully agree with you that re-learning to breathe properly all over again is no easy task!

My first re-introduction to proper deep diaphragmatic breathing was in Ki Aikido years ago, where we were taught to breathe into & out of our “One Point” or in Tai Chi we call it “Dan Tian”, a spot inside your body under the navel.

Initially, I had to practice extremely consciously, from the moment I woke up till the moment I fell asleep. When unused to it, you can “forget to breathe”. Got to get used to the sensation of the lower belly rising & falling too, it feels weird at first!

Finally, Sensei tested us on our breathing by standing on our one point when he felt we were ready, LOL, that was really something. But it was amazing also, when you breathe in & out of the one point properly, you don’t feel the weight of him standing there at all! (Not recommended to try without supervision!)

Now it’s more or less second nature but it’s interesting to note that it ought to be “first nature” & that we have to put in so much effort to go back to breathing the way we knew as babies!

Namaste,
Silver

Wow another terrific video. I loved it and really can feel the value in so many areas of my life. Since practicing hot yoga and this breathing technique I am rarely winded on the tennis court.
Thank you for another wonderful video!

Hi Gabriel,

Interesting video, thanx for clearing up the need not make unnecessary breathing noises and the venturi effect which is what carburators(sp?)use. Dizziness in experienced practitioners is caused by improper breathing techniques no doubt as a likely determinant. Did you get the fly that was near your face—lol.
Keep up your great down under productions.

Hi Brian

Did you know that that particular yoga move is called ‘the great Aussie salute’ - REALLY! LOL

No, I didn’t get that fly, I let him live! cheese along with the other million beasties that were around that day.

Thank you for the comment.

And this is soo off-topic ... but I spent ages trying to edit out that fly. In the end it made Gabrielle look worse ... so I let him/her live on video too.

Can you have Ahimsa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahimsa) in video-editing?

And yes, good old Venturi intakes in carburetors (US) carburettors (UK) - nice pick Brian!

I’m not sure I understood the place you are supposed to breathe from, to constrict the larynx?  I understand the difference from the buzzing sound, but are there any more specific instructions to how to do this?  I tried what I thought was the proper way today in my bikram class and got very dizzy, lightheaded and had to sit out a lot of the class.

Hi gummisteph

Please don’t constrict the larynx, as that will really tire you out. I think a hairdryer is a better description of the sound - one doesn’t add a tone to that, just that white sound. If you don’t seem to get it just yet, try deep breathing. Over time you should notice your ability enhance. You also want to get through class. cheese

Do you use ujayii breath throughout the practice?  I use it on the beginning pranayama but just try to breath normally though deeply in regular practice.  from what I understand, ujayii breath is to create internal heat so you wouldn’t need it after the beginning because it’s so hot already.  It’s used to get you acclimated.  It could be used throughout in a cooler room, but I’d worry about overheating in Bikram.

I do find though that ujayii really keeps you focused on the breath and sometimes I lose focus in my Bikram class.

Hi aralg

I do try to make that white noise sound with my breathing whenever I can (ie have the focus to keep a continuous, deep and mindful breath - I find it helps to have the audible component). It should really only be audible to yourself (not to your neighbors). My focus is definitely improved. I can’t say I can do it for 90 minutes every time. I sometimes lose my focus too you know! wink

Thanks
