Since I last posted I’ve had a hysterectomy and am going back to yoga on Monday, which will be the first day of my 6th week post op. My doc gave me my discharge papers on Thursday and said I’ve got the all clear but to take it easy. I am currently pain free with minimal, intermittent mild soreness and a little swelling still. I’ve begun very slowly stretching my abs by laying on my tummy and pushing up onto my elbows. Man were they tight, but it seems to be helping.

Any advice for how to handle getting back to class?

Night Sweats tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.843 2010-03-07T16:49:39Z Micherie I am approaching pre-menopause but my doc says I’m not quite there yet. However, I experience night sweats almost every night. It is profoundly worse on the days I eat hot food (I like REALLY hot stuff) and on the days that I do Bikram.

Does anyone else experience this? It’s getting to the point where I am losing sleep and it’s driving me bonkers.

Itchy skin from too much time in the hot room- help! tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.794 2010-01-31T17:52:54Z Alyssa726 Hello-

I have very sensitive skin, and I practice hot yoga everyday.  I’m often itchy.  Yesterday between classes and workshops, i spent 5 hours in the hot room.  By the end I was SO itchy!  Today in class, I couldn’t stop scratching.

Any advice on what I can do?  My dermatologist suggested taking a few weeks off from hot yoga but… no way!

Menstrual cycle tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2008:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.125 2008-03-31T11:07:04Z Martha My cycle has shortened to 3 weeks vs the 28 days since I’ve been practicing.  Should I be concerned and see a doctor?

Help! Excessive Tiredness tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.885 2010-04-10T15:11:02Z zpadin Hi! thanks so much for reading and sharing your thoughts with me on this topic.

I just started hot yoga 3 weeks ago. Following the advice of the teacher I went almost every day in the first two weeks. The challenge is I go to the 11 am class and afterward I’m completely out of commission, tired and sleepy. Can’t work and can’t do anything, depleted of energy.

The teacher said this was a normal reaction for a beginner, due to all the toxins release and the fact I wasn’t physically active before taking this classes.

Before posting this message, I’ve read other postings on the similar concerns and have followed the advise (drink plenty water before class, electrolytes drinks, ect..)

Still, took a break of 3 days and went back today to experience the same! I come home have lunch and then fall as sleep and simply can’t functioning - no energy.

By now It’s been 3 weeks going hot yoga and wondering if this is not for me :-(

Any suggestions? advice?

Could it be that my body is reacting adversely and as much as I love it - is not good for me?

Shall I go to the doctor? which test I can do to figure out what’s missing -
impacting the body?

thanks in advance!

Zulmarie

PD: great job with the site, I learned a lot…

a little freaked! tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.889 2010-04-14T06:16:07Z earlybirds I have been practicing yoga for almost a year and just recently (4 weeks) started Hot Yoga. I did hot yoga last summer but then didn’t have a class nearby until now. I am a little freaked out because I am feeling like I am gaining weight!! I have read tons of older post about this and I know I should give it time etc. I am not weighing myself, so I don’t know if I’m really gaining or if it just ‘feels’ like it. Pretty sure I am though! I am eating healthy, but do have a good appetite. I have posted before about the fact that I have struggled with an eating disorder in the past. I’m wondering if my new ‘weight’ is just due to me ‘filling out’ or if I’m getting fat! Do I just buy new pants or will this level out? I am no longer underwieght, so therefore am not too pleased about this! I am 5’7 and last time I did weigh it was around 125. I do NOT want to keep going UP! I keep thinking that maybe if I go low-carb or low-fat etc. maybe I could do better, but restrictions just really throw me for a loop! I am NOT eating like a pig or anything, just feel tempted to cut back.  I LOVE yoga, but don’t want it to make me keep gaining. I guess I just need some serious encouragement and motivation :(

Breathing Exercises tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.888 2010-04-12T14:39:29Z lotus4 Hi Gabrielle,
I have heard that some yoga breathing exercises can be harmful to one’s health, I guess if they are not done correctly. Are the two breathing exercises in hot yoga safe in nature even if they are not done correctly?  I am doing a home practice.

Thanks for your help!
Sandra

Does low blood pressure eventually normalise through bikram practise? tag:hotyogadoctor.com,2010:index.php/site/forum/viewthread/.863 2010-03-22T11:54:29Z Briar I have been really enjoying my bikram yoga and have been taking class about 4 times a week for about six weeks. I found my first couple of classes almost unbearable as I have low blood pressure but am now loving it!

I am, however, still feeling dizzy during the standing series and sometimes can only do one set of the more strenuous like triangle or head to knee. My teacher has told me that my blood pressure will eventually normalise but I’m wondering how long this will take?

I did see an improvement when I experimented with diet and took an energy supplement to drink before class but the effects didn’t seem long lasting, and I am back to feeling dizzy again.

Hope you can help,

Briar
