I am definitely not complaining about the lack of appetite after class, but it does seem surprising. When I used to go to the gym, I was ravenous after class & often for hours afterwards. After Bikram, despite not having eaten for at least a couple of hours prior to the class, I don’t usually feel hungry for a couple of hours. I usually want some fruit or something similar. Is there any particular reason why this would be so & is it normal ? Thanks. So many questions, I know…

Hi Gabrielle

First can I say, I love your site and have learn’t so much from your Forum. As a relative newbie to Bikram Yoga (I’m only a 6 month old yogi) it is great to read about other people’s questions, their struggles and successes.

As a previous gym junkie, aerobic instructor and runner, I tried hot yoga at the suggestion of a friend. I have found it to be more challenging than running a half marathon, to be incredibly frustrating mentally, to move me to tears at times, but also to be more rewarding physically and mentally than crossing any race finish line. I LOVE IT and practice 6 days a week now. (My running shoes rarely see the light of day anymore.)

Recently I discovered your link to Lucas at YogaBody. I have been following his stretching guide and taking his supplements for a week now and have already seen a big improvement in my flexibility. The stuff really works! Not only has it helped with my postures but I have more energy, less appetite, better digestion and find I’m sleeping better and coping with stress at work. Whats not to like! I highly recommend it to any fellow yogis!

Thanks again for your great site. To paraphrase Lucas, “Stay Bendy”
Namaste
Stephanie

Hi fellow yogis,

I have a fairly sensitive stomach, and on the days when I go to 6 p.m. yoga (i.e., after work), I definitely try to eat a low-key lunch. Not too heavy, not too spicy, not too much fiber, etc.

Some days, this works, and I get through class fine. But other days, I have awful stomach issues--just feeling really gaseous and uncomfortable, with stomach cramps or lots of burping. (Kind of gross, I know, sorry!)

I doubt there’s a way to “cure” this, minus eating only plain pasta or rice for lunch, but I guess my question is: how do you handle an upset stomach during class, especially when the spine-strengthening series seems absolutely impossible??

Thanks! I’m always interested in other yogis’ insights.

Over the last few months, I have become interested in Ayurvedic nutrition and general health practices. Being a pitta type, my tendency can be to over-heat, however I’m usually fine in the hot room. I generally avoid foods that are heating and I try to remain balanced in all areas of my life. My naturopath suggested that I oil myself before yoga sessions. I started doing this a few months ago and have gained tremendously from the practice. I use macadamia oil and rub it all over my body before class. The idea is that it assists in drawing toxins from the body with the sweat. I also find it cooling; an important benefit for us pitta types. Some people wonder whether it affects my grip, but I haven’t found that a problem. Has anyone else tried this?
