Well I can tell you what not to wear!

I just practiced at an amazing studio in Boston and when I arrived at the studio I found that I had not packed my gym shorts but I was in the right frame of mind for the class so I just did the class in jeans and a tee shirt. I am washing my jeans as I type due to the fact they are soaked through pretty bad! This “jean” practice really allowed me to focus on other challenges like the binding poses! I received a number of different looks going in, but everyone made me feel at ease ... although they will be telling their friends about the psycho that did hot yoga for an hour and half in jeans.

What can I say I love my yoga practice ... jeans, sweats, shorts ... I will practice in anything.

If you visit Boston these are the people to go to. They have three studios and I attended the Cambridge studio.

Hello Eve

and a big thank you to Jared! That was really funny LOL If you didn’t think that half the battle was controlling your mind, you do now wink

Yes Eve, we could start out by saying don’t wear jeans. Really you should avoid sleeves, long pants, anything that is baggy. Clothing like that tends to stick when you sweat and doesn’t move with the body.

I think the best thing to wear is stuff that moves with you, is a skin fit and wicks the sweat away from the body (plenty of wonderful modern fabrics available): gym gear, bike shorts, or capri pants (although you will cool down better in above the knee shorts).
Tops should be sleeveless. You can choose crop or singlet style tops. Once again you may feel cooler in crop tops.

Just a little note: not too skimpy, and nothing you need to do modesty checks on!!!

Enjoy your practice

Hey that is very funny!

As a male practicing Hot Yoga I find it important to focus on the “modesty check” - in my early days I wore shorts that were ... mmm how should we say ... “too loose”.

Nowadays I find lycra swimming shorts (halfway between a swimming costume and bike shorts) to be ideal.

Thanks to everyone for helping each other out on the new forum!

I swim three days a week but I think it will be awhile before I try wearing jammers to class. I have seen some board shorts that are light weight and reach down just above the knee as to not get caught. I may pick up a pair of those, but as for tonight it was the fact that I did not remember to bring my shorts. Oh well.

Here’s a site that I’ve found that seems to have a good selection of mens pants from several different manufacturers.  Hopefully you’ll find a pair that suits you!

I’ve always worn capris. It helps so much to eliminate the ‘slip’ factor. Maybe some day I’ll try shorts but I know I’ll slip and slide out of toe stand, tree etc. I remember a student that learned the hard way why we don’t put Nivea lotion on our skin before we practice. She bent over to grab her heels and down came the shorts. Slid right off her behind!! You know what was really cool though? She just moved to the back really quickly so she could continue this posture without mooning everyone behind her. It reminded me about what my instructor said once. “Fall out of a posture and your a human. Get back in and you’re a yogi”.

The instructors/owner at the studio I practice regularly insists we wear shorts.  She wants to check our knees at all times to make sure the muscle is lifted and the leg is locked.
So if I do wear long yoga pants, I roll them up for those postures.  I feel wearing the longer pants keeps me “warmer”.

Hi Edge

How much of a distraction is it to your practice/focus concentration to roll up and down your pants? Just wondering. You have been doing this yoga for some time now. I guess it is OK to take responsibility for it all now and just put up with whatever you are wearing. It may just mean you have to focus more strongly on the FEELING rather than the visual cue. One of our great challenges and aims is to ‘get into our bodies’.

There’s always somewhere else to go! wink

Would love to hear your take on it.

I consider it a trade-off or even a courtesy.  Like not wearing heavy perfumes during practice.  I wear the longer pants less than half the time so when I do and it gets time for standing head to knee,  I simply bend over efficiently and pull’em up.  I mean, I’d rather not, but she’s so good and so concerned about our postures I am only benefiting from it.

I am mostly good about the not fidgeting, saving energy for the meditation, postures.  in fact, just before class i will stand and look in the mirror and set an intention for myself, which typically includes no fidgeting stay focused on eyes in mirror.

PS:  Many of my yoga shorts are in storage from a still on-going move.  So my ratio tof long pants to shorts is like 4:1.  Hence I have to take a “stand” and wear the pants.  Pardon the pun. wink

I love the Prana line of yoga clothes…they’re comfortable and wick beautifully. I’m partial to the Prana sabin, jackie, halter and lola tops. As for pants I love the Prana asana, elisa and divine.  LOL

Hello Everyone, I am so excited to have found this forum cheese  I like prana, be present and hard tail clothing lines. They are fit really well for me. Im 5’9 and some other lines of clothing are “short” in length.
