Good afternoon! I’m so excited to find the forum and I’m hoping that someone can help me. I’m new to Bikram and have attended 4 classes. I intend to go 5 days a week (Monday to Friday). I cannot imagine why I was so scared to start and truly think just getting to the first class is the biggest challenge. The problem is my feet. I have no arch and I find the first few standing poses fine but as the standing series goes on my feet are ACHING! Is this something others have experienced and if so, does it go away eventually?

    Thanks

My husband and I noticed something similar in our beginning practice. When I talked with the instructor, she mentioned the fact that even the muscles in your feet need time to be strengthened too. In the mean time, she said, make sure that you are patient with yourself and try your best even if you frequently fall out. Also, make sure to relieve the pressure on your feet when you go home at night to try and allow your feet the most recovery time possible. The last tip was to wear orthopedically correct shoes whenever possible. Dorky as they might look, they can help alleviate some of the damage we women do by wearing torturous shoes.

I hope that helps. And I hope your foot pain and mine goes away quickly!

My feet kill me too! I’m flat-footed and find it very hard to stabilize myself in the standing 1-leg series – I fall out constantly. My feet actually cramp up quite a lot. It gets me frustrated because I feel it impedes my progress and form in the poses. I’ve been told ‘it comes’ but it’s been over 4 months now and I haven’t seen any improvement in the pain and balancing.
Other than that, I am finding lots of benefits and enjoying it!

I am there with you on the feet – from my ankles to the sides of the feet, they ache like I am wearing figure skates or really REALLY tight shoes…
My feet just cramp, and instead of taking water after eagle, I just kneel on my hands and feet and let my feet relax, which allows me to have a stronger standing series.
My instructor said it was from wearing heels – I don’t wear a huge heel for the most part, but regularly wear two inches.
Wish there was a quick exercise for this, but expect that I have done years of damage, and will take the same to heal – particularly if I keep wearing them – which I do…

I haven’t been here in a long time but I can tell you JUST KEEP PRACTICING! I can’t remember how long it took my flat feet to finally stop hurting but it happened. I don’t wear heels anymore but I do have flat feet and that seemed to be the issue for me. Awkward was sooo painful when I started to practice. Don’t worry, keep at it and keep trying. It really does get better!

For me it is ankles and feet sometimes. I told my instructor when I was attending my first few classes that my ankles hurt and can’t I stand with my feet apart. She explained we are trying to build strength in those areas so try to do what I can but always listen to my body.

I listened to her and kept my ankles together. Now they don’t hurt anymore. But I am still happy to get to the floor work.

I’ve been practicing hot yoga for 4 months now and the pain in my feet has not gotten any better. I have high arches and the outside of my feet is incredibly painful when in class.   I have tried to put more weight on the inside of my foot but it hurts so much it’s super distracting and I often have to stop and take the weight off my feet.   I am over weight but don’t have this issue with anything else other than yoga.
