Hi All,
Have just stared Bikram a few weeks ago & am going about 4 times a week, really liking it! Definately addictive – cant explain why!
Anyway, i have a goal to loose 7kgs over the next 3 months and was hoping Bikram will help – i can already tell it makes me want to eat healthier food & im defiantely drinking more water.I am wondering if anyone has experianced weight loss from Bikram & would love to hear your stories? Its not the only excercise i do, but am hoping it will kick the weight loss into gear!
Ive also noticed my skin is clearer & im sleeping better!
Looking fwd to hearing some stories!
Hi Sally
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your practice.
It may surprise you to know that the most read forum post here is called I Am Quite Overweight And Doing Hot Yoga. Check it out and other inspirational stories and even advice and others’ experience in the section called Weight Loss and Hot Yoga.
I am very confident that you are on the way to achieving your goals.
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂I believe bikram can help to loose weight, I do muay thai training and the training is really tough, like the warm up itself is 2000 time rope skip, follow with shadow boxing bagwork and ending with 50 push-up, 100 crunches, leg raise, squat and so on. When I first try out bikram, I find it tough and I perspired as much as in my boxing training.
One question I want to know is, I notice the guys in bikram class and also I did a bit of research on yoga, that yoga build muscle that is long and lean because of the stretches, I have build quite a nice 6 pack abs (which I am very proud of) through my boxing training, will yoga make my 6 pack abs disappear. I notice even the male teacher does not have 6 pack abs but they have a nice long lean cut body type which looks fat free. When I am in a class, I look odd :cheese: among the male in the class because of the build I have.
I took up yoga to help me to be more flexible for my high kicks and martial arts, which it did help a lot.
thanks
VincentSalrj,
I have been doing Bikram yoga for about a year now. I expected to lose some weight as I was doing it because it is so physically challenging. Over time I have gotten thinner, but have not lost one pound. It is really interesting that I now wear clothes that used to fit me when I was 10 pounds lighter! I have gone down one-two dress sizes. This tells me that I have gained a significant amount of muscle–which is heavier–and lost a good bit of body fat. What is really interesting is that I have always worked out very regularly before I started Bikram without having this impact. At first, I was watching the scales and was very discouraged that I had not lost any weight. Over time I realized that I could wear smaller size clothing and that my weight no longer fluctuates. It is amazing how my weight is the same every time that I step on the scale now.
Something that is even more interesting is that I no longer feel compelled to go to my Bikram classes as a measure to control my weight. I go because of the way that it makes me feel. I feel stronger physically, mentally and emotionally. Now I go for my health.
Enjoy your journey!
CindyThanks for that Cindy!
I was getting a bit discouraged that i had actually put on weight!
but i found tyhe same a few years ago when i was running – i lost alot of cm but no actual weight in kgs! I guess i should get out the measuring tape!Hi Salrj – I have definitely “lost weight” from doing Bikram yoga – I put it into quotes because I lost a couple of inches waist-size, but I would know about the actual “weight” as we don’t have scales. Gabrielle & I recommend you throw them away actually!
I’ve also put “size” back on with an absence from yoga – but as soon as I get back into it, it all comes off again when I keep my practice up (and with only minor dietary changes – mainly stopping the chocolate and cookies for a while … ooops!)
@ tamadrums
I don’t think your six-pack will disappear IF you keep up your other training. When Gabrielle finished her training in 2001, her six-pack was the envy of many guys (and seriously awesome!) – but this was 11 classes a week for 9 weeks – not the usual yoga student attendance. So it is possible, but not for most mere mortals who may only practice 3-5 times/week.
For cross-training it can’t be beaten in my view – so if you supplement your Bikram classes with continued abs training, you’ll not only be strong (and have appealing abs), you’ll also be more flexible and balanced.
Cheers!
Robert

Robert… why was she attending 11 classes per week?Hi DanielleNZ – that’s an easy question to answer 😉
It is mandatory for anyone attending Bikram Yoga Teacher Training!
(That’s on top of the program hours itself)
Oh awesome thanks 🙂 I thought it could have something to do with that or that it’s the recommended number of times to attend a week 🙂
