    hI Gabrielle!

i have a few questions about what to do! i have had a knee surgery and have a knee prothese….i cannot grab my ankle in standing bow-i need to use a strap or towel. In fixed firm and half tortoise i have a hard time doing them because i cannot sit japanese style on my knees, neither can i do camel. In head to knee and stretching pose, i cannot bend my legs in a 90 degree angle, i can leave them both open …Is this ok? what can i do to maximise the benefits in these postures…while limited with a knee replacement??

    thank you again,

    yogini:)

    Hello yogini

It is fine to use your towel or strap to grab your ankle or foot in Standing Bow. Please try to gently point your toes if you are grabbing around the ankle. The reason is that in order to hold the strap in place, students will often unconsciously flex the foot. Also see if you can maintain your arm externally rotated just as you would for the normal pose so that your shoulder doesn’t roll inward and forward.

Is it the pressure and resultant discomfort through your knee that makes it difficult in Fixed Firm or Tortoise? Or is it a limitation in the bend that makes it impossible to sit with hips on heels? Has your doctor mentioned what kind of range of motion you can expect or work toward, or even a limitation that they expect you can’t go past?

Leaving your legs straight out in front of you or at some angle is fine. If that’s all you can do then that’s all you can do! There are plenty of people who can do Head to Knee with one leg extended and still get the benefits because of correct technique. Conversely there are plenty of people who bend their other leg in who don’t set the pose up properly. How to set it up correctly is widely misunderstood by many. There are some pointers on the forum for you to check into.

Keep me updated and get back to me on those questions above for those 3 poses you mentioned.

I realize that this is an old thread but it came up when I searched for help on knee prosthesis.  I recently started hot yoga lite & really have no experience with any kind of yoga.  I thought hot yoga would be good for losing weight, getting in shape & improved flexibility.  I am unfortunately  I had a knee replacement 10 years ago & I have some limitatons. Quite honestly I’m not sure if I will ever be able to sit on my heels, my knee replacement just doesn’t bend that much.  I also have trouble being on all fours on the yoga mat in class because it hurts my knee.  Is there any kind of knee pad that could be used for those poses without affecting my alignment too much.

I’ve never had any prior experience working out in the heat.  My studio offers some lite versions of hot yoga that are at a 90 degree temperature & a 50% humidity.  I’ve been taking those to first get acclimated to that heat & then thought I’d progress up to the 98 degree heat & 60% humidity in a few weeks.  Is that the right approach or with that cause two different acclamations?  is it better if I just go straight to the 98 degree heat?

    Thanks!
