Hello! I have a quick question regarding Janushirasana. I am taking a Yoga Training (not in bikram) but we have an amazing teacher who is always reminding us about being extra careful NOT to hyperextend our knees. We are using many books that explains many postures. Now specifically with Janushirasana, the book reminds the reader to be careful NOT to lift the heel as this can result in hyperextension. But this seems to go against most hot yoga practice instructors? What was the ORIGINAL instruction of this pose? Why was it ever changed? And why the contradiction? I attended Bikram Yoga for three years and was always taught to lift up the heel in the final part of the posture. Was I doing something wrong here? Where and when did the “rules” of this posture change? Can you help clarify? 🙂
Hi Andrea
Welcome! I would be interested firstly to know whether you are told to lock your knee or not (ie pull kneecap up with quadriceps) or if all students are advised against such a position. I would also like to know what your teacher recommends for people who are hyperextending. This will give me an understanding of the information and an appreciation of what you’re being taught.
Namaste
Gabrielle 🙂
