First off, I apologize if i missed this in the faq’s…

I am considering Bikram but my schedule is rough.

I see some folks go 4-7 times a week but there is no way I’d be able to make it more then twice a week.

Is it honestly worth it for me to go if at most I can only go twice a week?

I am in fairly decent shape (38 year old male) with mediocre cardio, I’d like to drop about 10 pounds. I practice martial arts once a week but work long days. I have found a studio with daily 6 am classes.

    Thanks for any input!

    🙂

Bikram says you need to go every day…the analogy he uses is its like a bank…if you go day one you get 10 credits, if you miss the next day you loose 5 credits…you get the picture.

I practice M-Sat. I’m 45 y/o male and do it not because I enjoy it (generally I do not) but for the results. Bikram says its like “brushing your teeth”…I like that analogy. I do not like to brush my teeth either but I know it helps. Same with Bikram.

Try it for one month straight…then see if you want to only do 2x / week.

    Hi Vin

For you it could be a question of the ideal world versus what’s possible. Sure, going every day would beat twice a week. But twice a week is a good effort. Especially since you’ll also be practicing your martial arts.

Many people find themselves being able to be more productive (clear head, greater focus etc) and it is often this way that they liberate time to practice more yoga!

Do what you can. If you find this works for you (you feel results and maybe see them too!) then it is highly possible that you’ll change your schedule to fit more classes in.

It doesn’t have to be an all or nothing approach.

    Hey,
I go 3-4x/week now, but when I started I only went twice a week. I definitely saw results, and then seeing those results motivated me to alter my lifestyle a bit to get in the extra class or two. Especially since you’re also doing other physical activity, I bet you’ll see progress!

I too am going only twice a week (saturday and sunday) and stat holiday. Do I want to go more often? Sure, but it is just impossible. It is too far for me to travel. I have other committment too. But there is a 30 day challenge coming up in June. I would love to participle. I’ll need to miss 1.5 hour work everyday which my boss will not like.

Consider a home practice. A couple of space heaters and a humidifier and you can start the 30 day challenge tomorrow!

I live over an hour from a studio…so mostly I go at home. Its tough…for me its easier in the room….but it is a great workout .

First, I’m hooked on Bikram Yoga!! I live over an hour from the studio….and it’s a four hour commitment to get to class, enjoy class then get back home. Since I telecommute and there’s a 5:30am class, I can get up, get to class and be in the office at a reasonable hour. Occasionally, when I’ve got an early conference call, I hit the 6:30pm class. I’m very fortunate to have found a studio that offers so many classes, that I can make this work with my schedule. I enjoy the benefits and really feel something missing when I miss more than a day or two!!!

What I have found is when I practice regularly, my body works better (47 y/o male with body beat up after 20 years in Marines)

If I miss several days, my body “hurts”

It is a great overall workout…strength and flexibility and mental discipline all rolled into one!

I did a 44 day unlimited but only managed to go 17 times. I’m wondering the same thing, is 2x a week enough? I’m a 27y/o female, busy life, interested in lots of new things. It takes me 3 hours roundtrip for one class.

I’m trying to decide between a yearly unlimited or a mix of punch cards. My company reimburses some of the expense if I go 8x a month, so I’m definitely going to go that much. A yearly unlimited is only cost effective if I go 10 times a month. I just recently moved to Hawaii so I’m trying to be frugal and I don’t know exactly what the next year will bring, but I love the body and benefits that come with Bikram yoga. Is 8 times a month enough to see results/maintenance?

    Thanks for your input!

^ If you are committed to bikram yoga as the only form of exercise, consider doing doubles (back to back class). That is what I have been doing for 5 months now. I go only on weekends. That is equal to going 4 times a week. I tried a triple once. I could barely move after the first breathing exercise.

    Hi Danielle

It’s hard to say. It depends on your motivation. In your post you haven’t mentioned what you want to achieve by going 2 times per week. Is it shape change, wellbeing, stress relief?

Is it that you love the yoga and can’t do without it? Could you possibly practise at home and take about an hour off your time commitment? Could you think of a way where it would be an organic way of inviting yoga into your life instead of calculating it in?

I only want you to do what works for you. So if working it out mathematically works then go for it! I can see how 3 hours (minimum) for a single class can wear thin after a while. So perhaps there’s another answer for you.

I think that it would be hard to work out what kind of pass to get when for example you haven’t experienced 4 or 5 classes per week. Some people go that many times and make the yoga their only formal exercise. You can get results with 2 classes per week. but as I asked, what results are you after?

Thanks for the feedback! I’m in pretty decent shape already but I’m enamored with the health benefits, I love the way I feel after the class. I don’t want to end up stiff and fat and unhealthy when I’m older, and I think it’s important to always have an active lifestyle to prevent such a thing.

I have a calendar by my door, under my studio’s hours, that I color in each day I make practice. It gives me a thrill and a sense of satisfaction when I can mark those days off. Really good method of motivation when i see that colorful calendar every day.

When I started the 44 day pass I was really pumped and planned to go everyday until a friend convinced me to take every 4th day off. I think that may have thrown me off a bit because I started skipping more days, but going everyday made me feel really tired and run down. I have a tendency to skip sleep when I get involved in activities, so that’s likely why.

On a positive note, I pretty much stopped drinking alcohol, drank a ton more water, of course, and felt really, just overall, healthy! My mind was quiet, I wasn’t as anxious, I had more energy and focus, I was able to fit a lot more chores, like laundry, cooking, cleaning, into the same amount of space I used to sit around and drink wine watching netflicks. Hah!

I loved the way my body was toning, losing inches. I was getting stronger with more muscle definition and I loved it.

Also, since I was biking to and from class and to and from work, the extra aerobic exercise only assisted in toning my body and strengthening my heart. I don’t have a car so that’s my main method of getting around. Unfortunately I was just clipped by a car and broke my pinkie toe with bruises and scrapes along my left side, so it’s been almost 3 weeks since I’ve been to the studio and I feel gross!

I’m way less flexible, more anxious, and back to the old habit of drinking more. Typically I eat healthy, usually skip a lot of carbs, but don’t have a strict diet, so I’ve been noticing my core muscles are loose and I just feel flabby, even though I’m still the same weight and look fine.

I’m not really trying to convince myself to go with the mathematics. I know when I go regularly I crave it, so I think that will take care of itself. I’m just active in other way, like hiking, social life, sometimes overtime at work, and I’m trying to forecast how much I’ll be able to dedicate myself. I know this is a personal decision, but I wanted to hear from people on this forum about how they’ve seen their busy schedules develop with Bikram.

Sorry for the long response, but wanted to give you some more details! Thanks for your advice!

    Hi Danielle

I read your post again and realised nobody had commented yet. I am wondering if it’s because your question may need to be a little clearer! I am unsure how to help. Have you managed to get back to your practice after your accident? I broke my little toe last year and it wasn’t so bad to balance and work until I broke the big one on the same foot. 😆 I know there are challenges in practising at all when standing or putting weight through the foot is difficult!
