Hi, I have been doing bikram yoga for almost 2 yrs now and love it. I had a baby five months ago and continued doing bikram during my pregnancy. I overall felt much better in this pregnancy than my others, but I also feel like my body started having issues. One thing was that my hip started really hurting. I finally went to the Dr, and it ended up that I tore the cartilage in my left hip. I have been doing PT trying to get more stength, and got the OK to go back to yoga this week. The Dr told me that I have hyper flexibility, and that I shouldn’t go as deep into the poses. In going back, I notice that I really feel discomfort in my hip during the eagle, triangle, and half moon poses. I am trying to not go as deep into the poses as I did before, but I am wondering how much I should push it. I have been told by some instructors that some discomfort is good because it increases the blood flow to the certain area. I am afraid to push it too far, but don’t know where to draw the line. I also want to get better so right now I feel frustrated not knowing what to do. Do you have any advice for me?

Im not gab but… heres my two cents lol
when dealing with hyperflexiblity you dont want to focus on stretch as much as strength
really tighten and contract your hips in these poses (dont forget about making your butt like two little coconuts!!)
I would not go into the pose very deep to feel stretch
it should feel like your pressing gently against a wall
stretching one side flexing the other having the two forces meet in the middle

    Hi Amy

At what stage of pregnancy or post childbirth did your injury surface?

During pregnancy your body produces hormones that open up the pelvis so that childbirth is physically an easier task. The pelvis gets wider. After childbirth it can take months to bring your body back to its previous form. It is best to focus on poses and forms that stabilize (contract back) your pelvis.

For example, for me it took me well over half a year for my hips to return to what I considered to be close to normal. I felt the change mostly in my difficulty to do Wind Removing pose. It went from super easy to difficult.

So you could either avoid poses that create a moving apart of your pelvis in favour of those that draw it back in energetically speaking. Either avoid those poses that cause discomfort, or modify them to halve the depth. What you could do is seek out some post natal yoga classes for some personalised help. Then take that body knowledge with you to hot yoga and see how that fits with your practice.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
