I will be starting Bikram Yoga soon and am very excited about it, this will be my very first time. My only concern is my contact lenses. Have any of you has experiences(good/bad) that can help me? I know glasses will be an even worse alternative because they will get fogged. And I can’t see more than four feet ahead of me if I dont wear my contacts or glasses. The ones I wear are usually okay when I have a shower, they do get a little uncomfortable in steam rooms.

I use contacts all the time for Bikram and my eyes are fine. The only problem I have is that my eyes become bloodshot but since I’ve never done Bikram Yoga without contacts, I can’t say whether the bloodshot eyes are caused by the contacts or the sweat dripping into my eyes.

I’ve wondered this too. I currently only wear glasses and choose not to wear them in yoga. So everything appears a fuzzy blur execpt my towel and feet. I would love to wear contacts in class and was thinking you can get those hydrating drops for contacts, possibly that would work?

I finally got tired of my glasses falling off and getting streaked with sweat and got contacts. They work fine for me although I do notice that some days, if the humidity is very low, they get to feeling a little dry by the end of class. I have some wetting drops and usually use them just before I go into the yoga room.

I ran into my boss once shortly after class and between the bloodshot eyes and yoga-brained responses was surprised that I wasn’t tapped for a “random” drug test at work the next day.

I only wear contacts when I do hot yoga. I couldn’t imagine wearing glasses. The only issue I have is I need to towel off my face and chest before rabbit, otherwise the sweat drips into my eyes and stings. They are also a little harder to remove after a class as they tend to be suctioned to my eyeballs but I only notice this if I try to take them out immediately after class. –Patty

I stopped wearing mine except for when I go to yoga. You’ll have to take them out after class some time to rest your eyes and re-wet them, eyes and lenses, but in class it’s no big thing. Depending on how blind you are you’ll need them to see in the mirror. Wear them for awhile, then don’t one day and notice the difference.

    Hi divsreddy,

I wear contacts all the time for yoga and haven’t had any problems at all (I wear soft lenses). I don’t believe you have anything to worry about.

I had Lasik done before I started Bikram, but after 20 years of full time contact lens use, I’m pretty familiar with the fear of sweat dripping in my eyes. But what I’ve discovered is that if I don’t have any sunscreen, makeup, hair products, etc. on and I’m just dripping clean sweat – shockingly, it feels the same as rewetting eyedrops. I think I was so used to only sweating when I was out in the sun wearing sunblock, that I didn’t ever realize that until now.

I’ve worn soft contacts in Bikram classes for ten years and I’ve never given them a thought. Like Connie says, the sweat comes and goes and is not a concern. But sunblock, now that’s a different story. Holy – talk about stinging!
