    Hi everyone!

I have seen a few postings on people feeling dizzy during hot yoga, especially at first, but I feel that what I am experiencing is more severe. I have been practicing for 3 months now, 3-4 times a week, but I am still needing to sit out a lot of the standing postures because of extreme dizziness. Sometimes I am certain I will faint, it is so bad! As soon as I squat to rest, the spots clear from my eyes and I feel fine, but the instant I get up to continue, they return and I have to either fight through it or sit down again. It always begins somewhere between awkward pose and standing head to knee, and it is usually fine after standing separate leg stretching, once my head is below my heart, although occasionally I will still have trouble with triangle. Once we get to tree pose, the rest of the session is completely fine. I am really struggling with this and wondering if I should find another yoga that is not hot! I do have low blood pressure as well, although I have read on several other posts that your body should be able to adapt to this.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,
    -Alana

I used to get dizzy when rising up from hands to feet. It’s difficult to pin point what I did to stop it from happening. It was either the fact that I was more conscious about electrolytes in between classes and drinking enough water.

As a starting point, perhaps you can have some coconut water before class and see if that makes any difference.

    Hi Alana

I know the feeling! I used to have what is considered low blood pressure. It’s still considered lowish.

A couple of questions: Are you aware if you breathe through your nose or your mouth? Is it possible that in times of challenge or even struggle you are holding your breath, or even switch from nose to mouth breathing? Is it possible that you are breathing perhaps too deeply?

I know what has helped me say in Hands to Feet and I still do it now, is once I finish the pose I let go of my feet, take a full breath before I start to come up off the floor.

Just see what happens when you are a little more conscious of your breathwork in relation to your dizziness.

    Namaste

i’ve been practicing for a little more than a week and feel a little dizzy when rising to my feet. i also feel a little lightheaded all the time now — it’s pretty annoying. i can also hear my heart pounding in my ears now and again, a swooshing, which is pretty weird. what confuses me is that the dizziness seems to be postural hypotension, but my BP is typically a little on the high side 140/90. maybe i should check it…

    anybody feeling like this? thanks!!

    Hello Toni,

Could you please tell me what exactly mean when you say you feel dizzy all the time? All day – every day OR all the time during your class?

Also, I have a couple of questions for you 😉
    – How much water do you drink on days when you practise and on days when you don’t?
    – How do you replenish your electrolytes? Do you take any supplements? If yes, what kind?

Here is a link for some essential information on Hot Yoga and Exercising in extreme heat. I think it could be very useful for you. I would be interested to know whether it resonates with you.

    Namaste,

    Andrea
