I came off the contraceptive pill nine months ago to start trying for a baby, however I have not had a period since. My hormoned levels have been checked and are normal, but my doctor has suggested it’s the level of exercise I do. I run approx 30miles a week and also do three or four bikram classes. I’ve read reports that bikram can affect your fertility. Has anyone heard evidence of this, or have any women who practice bikram had problems with their periods or concieving?

    Hi Amy

It is definitely possible that your body is still recovering from all the time you were on the pill. I certainly had a similar issue and it took months before my system was normal. But I wasn’t exercising as much…

So it seems as though you need more investigation. My doctor gave me Chinese Herbal Medicine and that seemed to do the trick. I am not suggesting it would do for you but you may want to see how you can normalise your systems. It will probably take more than just coming off the pill.

Nutrition could be a big determinant. I am a fan of a diet of mostly raw food. It takes some experimentation to know what works. But certainly check into the benefits (hormonally speaking) of incorporating more raw food and juices into your diet.

And yes I am pleased to say I personally know people who have had fertility success stories after going to hot yoga. (Personal and not third party friend of a friend stuff!).

Somebody who runs 30 miles a week must LOVE running. I would look around the web, ask questions about what running could do to your (reproductive) system. Find out whether it’s worthy at least temporarily cutting back and focusing on nurturing and more gentle exercise (yoga!). Whatever you do has to feel right for you. I cannot advise you on that one because every body is different and circumstances (physical, mental, emotional etc) are different.

    Good luck. Keep us posted

    Namaste

    Hey AmyM,
I bet people have a LOT of personalized stories about getting pregnant and missing periods and possible exercise connections. Here’s one to add to the bunch 😉

My best friend went through the same thing. She exercised a lot, was really thin, and did a lot of Bikram yoga. She also didn’t have a period for a long time. She ended up cutting back on exercise and only did Bikram 2-3x/week and more natural expressions of exercise like walking and hiking. She also did acupuncture and the combination did the trick–she’s now in her fourth month.

Somehow, being gentle on yourself, always but especially when trying to get pregnant, seems like a good approach. 30 miles/week plus yoga seems like a lot.

That said, I’m not an expert in ANYTHING, so please take this little story with a big grain of salt.

I would think your body weight/composition and nutrition could have a lot to do with it. I’ve known people who run/bike/etc. a lot (even more than you) and didn’t have issues getting pregnant, but I think the body composition and nutrition component are probably more important than the amount of exercise.
