    Hello,

Last Thursday I started Bikram yoga. I felt great afterwards, completely refreshed and rejuvenated. The next day I felt a little sore but figured it was just from starting a new exercise. I’m in moderately good shape–I bike about 2 times a week and walk just about everywhere. The aches and pains went from just being sore to my entire body being ache-y; fingers and toes included. I actually cancelled my Sunday class because it was so difficult to move. I stayed hydrated before, during, and after my class so I don’t think it has anything to do with dehydration, but I thought that the discomfort would have subsided by now.

Is this a normal reaction to one’s first time doing hot yoga or is something else going on? I really enjoyed it and hope I don’t need to stop, but if I’m always going to feel this way for days after, I don’t think I can continue.

Any input would be helpful, thanks!

    Hi Dana

I was away when you posted. My apologies. OK, so what often happens in the beginning of practice is that teachers and other students tell you to hydrate well, but they don’t talk about electrolytes as much. It is possible that you need(ed) some kind of supplementation. Sea salt, more expensive commercial electrolytes powders, gels and potions will usually do the trick. You choose how you want to do it.

If you are aching then there are reasons: Electrolytes. Hydration. Pose technique. If you are new to exercise then it can also be getting used to it.

Can you describe the feeling in your fingers and toes (even if it has gone away by now)?

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
