Hey everyone i’m new here, and my friend told me to start yoga classes because Im stressed out, and I have to learn how to relax.. and I dont know how to do that, especially since in extremely competitive..
and the thing is I like to be prepared for things, and I wanted to know what kind of clothes I should wear?
I saw a couple of websites with these pants:
    http://www.hookedproductions.com/images/yoga pants2.gif
    and these
    http://www.twenga.com/price-yoga-pants-clothing.html
and I really dont know which are more practical, and comfortable
    second thing:
what should I do meanwhile? Should I start streching or something? what can I do to prepare myself?
    thanks for helping me out!

I’m a Newbe too, about 6 months. Firstly I’d say RELAX!!!
I started in cheap pair’s of legging and vest top’s. You will sweat like MAD and be wet and smelly but so is everybody else. I’d say don’t go buying all the gear ’till you have done a 30 Day stint and decide it’s for you…then invest in some good gear. I don’t know maybe there is no recession where you are but trust me, NO ONE is interested in what you look like, what you are wearing or what you’re doing in a Bikram Class!!! (If your competitive streak goes as far as wanting to ‘look’ like a experienced pro by what you’re wearing!)
The biggest prep. you can do is drink at LEAST 2 ltrs of water up to 2 hours before your class and bring a Large bottle in with you.
From a stress point of view I think you will find Bikram of benefit but more so for your competitive nature…..some things in Bikram take time…sometimes a LONG time for your body to loosen out…you just got to roll with it each class. You may champion at one and totally flunk the next….
It is what it is on any given day….
Give it a go though, either way you’ll be glad you tried it!
PS: No need for stretching etc…just get yourself in the door! That’s the hard bit!

Wear something comfortable, like stretchy pants. They should be tight fitting so the teachers can see your legs(to tell if you’re locking them right). Drinks lots of water, stretching before hand is good but not necessary, just move around and get loose. Be competitive with yourself, not with others around you(besides, if you start looking around yourfocus and balance is toast). I just try to do better in each set than I did the last. Like the other reply, some things you’ll get right away, some you won’t. But it sure is fun!!

That’s kinda like asking if you should learn French before signing up for French class! If you’re going to Bikram/hot yoga, do like the others have said, drink 2 litres, finishing up two hours before class, and just go! have fun! Do report back on how it goes.

Yup. Just getting there and staying in the hot room is half the battle.

I agree if you start looking at everyone else………..there goes your focus and you are not going to have a good class. I have been doing hot yoga for almost a year, and still struggle with MANY of the postures.

    Hi Allison

I curious to know what happens when you’re struggling. What is going on specifically? Is it particular to certain poses or is it a generalized response to the yoga?

Welcome to the world of Hot Yoga!
Here are a few tips for you to best prepare:
    1. Read up on studio etiquette! If you go to your home studio’s website, I’ll bet there’s some info about what to do and what not to do…in short, set up at the back (front row is generally for experienced students), bring water, stand quietly between postures, remember it is a silent practice, and listen to your body.
    2. Hydrate well the day before your class, especially the night before. Don’t eat 2 or 3 hours before class or you’ll feel sick.
    3. Wear whatever makes you comfy, but I’d personally avoid long cotton t shirts and long pants. A pair of running or yoga shorts and a sports bra will do. If you want to cover up, you can add a tank top if you like. We have poepl who actually practice in bathing suits (yes, they are women!), so that is a perfectly acceptable option, too.
    4. Tell the teacher you are new, at your first class. They’d like to know cause they can pass on tips and keep an eye on you for the class.
    FINALLY, and the hardest thing:
    5. Check your ego at the door. You say you are competitive, so keep in mind that you’ll be checking everyone out and comparing you to them. This is natural, but just remember that no one cares what YOUR practice is like, so it really is wasted effort. Do what you can, and don’t worry about anyone else in the class. After all, its your first class! Focus on what you are doing and don’t worry if you don’t “look” like everyone else. Harsh but true, and said with love.
Have fun and let us know how it goes!
