50 yr old male, new to hot yoga(10 classes)and suffering hip joint pain which I have never had. Does not hurt during class. Will this eventually go away? Never had hip pain before. Suggestions?

Hello theonull and welcome to the forum!

We’re going to need some more info in order to help – when does the hip pain start? Immediately after class? Overnight? When walking or sitting? Is it the joint or muscles surrounding?

It’s quite normal to have some aches and pains (and also normal to have none) when you first start hot yoga, depending on your level of fitness, other activities etc You will be using muscles you haven’t really done so much work with – and it can take a good couple of months before nothing “aches”.

Having said that, it’s possible that misalignment in poses can cause undesirable side effects – and if you try to force some poses (Fixed Firm for example; Eagle is another) you might unknowingly create issues in your hips.

Correct alignment will always reduce the chances of any issues!

Let us know some specifics and we’ll try to help.

    Namaste,

    Robert

I am new to hot yogs, 3 classes… So far i love it.

I don’t have hip pain, however, I had a hysterecotmy 7 months ago and a few hours after a hot yogs class, I get pain in my lower right side, where most of the surgery took place. Will this get better?

Robert, Thank you. Hip pain starts after sitting for a long period of time or by the time I have walked 14 holes on a golf course.
No individual pose causes pain, I try to emulate the instructor to get the poses correct.

    Hi Theo

I am wondering if you can describe the pain. Is it constant? Is it as you strike your foot on the ground as you’re walking? What relieves the pain? Putting your legs up or just sitting down or just a little time of inactivity? Do you feel as though you have tight hips? What can you tell me about the way you walk, whether you have fallen arches or any issues with knees, feet, spine…

Hmmm… a lot of questions. We just need more hints!

Pain while walking directly in the hip joints. Goes away while sitting. as for injuries, where do I start: Stenosis in lower facets, ACL, MCL, torn ankle ligaments.
Too many years of competetive baseball and ski racing!
Yes, I have always had overall tight muscles and hips.

ps. Loving Hot yoga and getting stronger and more limber each day. Too bad most guys cant put their ego away and try this. I’ve been a gym rat for 30 years and will not go back. oh yeah, my wife talked me into it and she loves it too.

Have some x rays done by an osteopath or MD who specializes in joints. Sounds like you have cartilage wearing in your hip joints. Tightness in hips is what everyone thinks is the problem because no one wants to admit it could be something worse. Yoga will help, perhaps a lot, but if you do have arthritis or some kind of degenerative condition, yoga won’t cure it.

    Hi Theo

May I please confirm with you that you are doing Bikram yoga or perhaps another hot yoga.

Problems in knees, ankles and feet can be an issue for anything above. Actually above and below a point of pain manifestation but you did mention your some pretty hefty knee and ankle damage! hankgretchen makes a great point. It certainly wouldn’t help to check out the issue from a medical point of view.

Arthritis is certainly relieved significantly and many people keep it at bay with signs of total reversal with a regular hot yoga practice.

Can you also tell us if now that you’ve most likely attended more classes whether you still feel that hip pain with the same intensity?

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
