I really have trouble with this. I guess the inhale does happen automatically but more CO2 is going out then O2 going in. It causes me to get dizzy and slightly hyperventilate. I must be doing something wrong.

I get so tired during this, sometimes I have to “fake it” to get done with this. It maybe the hardest thing for me during class.

I am not an expert at all and have no trouble with this pose. But I am doing yoga at home together with my partner who found this pose very difficult. The idea is to move your lungs and breathe by using your abdominal muscles.
I will tell you what was his problem, maybe it will help you. He was really trying to move his belly but somehow ‘kept his breath’. Suck in your stomach muscles towards your spine. With that action your lungs will automatically push out some air. Just keep your mouth open, don’t blow with force, the air will come out automatically when you contract your stomach muscles. The force comes from your stomach muscles, not from your lungs. When you suck in your stomach (mouth open) again and again, you will also automatically inhale passively when your stomach muscles relax in between. Important is that you don’t keep your breath meanwhile and that you really use your stomach muscles. My partner had very weak stomach muscles, so that gave him problems as well. When you really concentrate on sucking in your stomach whenever other exercises requires so, your muscles will definitely strengthen and the pose may get easier.
It also helps to put your hand on your belly, just to know that you are using the right muscles.
Maybe more experienced yogi(ni)s can give some more feedback. Lisa

Thank you for responding. I feel that I am really focusing on my abdominals and using my diaphragm to push out air. It’s just I think I exhale more air than I take in, which causes the hyperventilation. Maybe I am forcing to hard..I don’t know. I just tried it now..I get very light headed. Are we supposed to feel that way?

    Hi Pamela

You may indeed be trying too hard. Try just letting little bits of air move in and out. And focus on your belly. It could be that you’re trying to maximize movement of air out of your mouth and throat. Could that be right? Up the intensity over time with your increased skill…

    Hi and thank you,

I do think I am pushing out way too much air, much more than I bring in. I am going to try your advice and focus more on form than the amount of air I move. Thank you!

    Update:

I found out I have Asthma. Mostly affected by exercise or very cold weather. Also, the studio was having problems keeping the humidity up so it was dry heat making it even harder on me to breathe.

I am now on some inhaled medications and the studio has installed a new humidifier. I have such a better experience in class and can finally do the final breathing!
