It happened twice that I signed up for gym. Spent all this money for registration fee, spent money on transport, go for 5 months and then something happens. You know it – holidays, sickness, family issues, work.

I always find it difficult to go back.

Very similar thing happened to me with yoga. I practiced for the whole month (5 days on, 2 off) at the studio, then my membership run out and I promised myself I’ll continue at home. (can’t afford it and I live quite far away). I’ve done yoga at home 3 times since my last day at the studio. The biggest problem I am facing is the heat. I can’t afford to heat up the room every evening to 37’C. I got sick the last time I exercised in lower temperature (around 23’C)

I’ve tried to put on more clothes (not good), tried warming up before yoga (not good either).
Sometimes I think I am coming up with all this excuses, maybe all I need is a kick in the butt. What do you think?

Or does anyone have any idea about how to motivate myself at home?

    Hi Lubi

One of life’s big lessons (in my humble opinion) is to learn to focus on the solution and not the problem. What can you/we come up with that speaks to you that would work for you to recommit to yourself and your practice?

Here are some questions for you to consider:

    >> Are the type of person who needs to go to practice at the studio?

If yes then work out how much you can afford and go and ask at the studio for some kind of arrangement that will work in with your budget and lifestyle. A busy city studio may need someone to help around the joint for a few hours per week – say on one afternoon/evening. Many studios around the world have a ‘work for yoga’ program. You would have to go then! 😉

    >> Or can you see yourself practicing at home 5 days per week by yourself?

If yes then work out how much extra time you would have to yourself by not traveling to the studio. Value it! Invest in a heater (ask me for I know of a local manufacturer!) and then commit.

I may be wrong by my intuition is (and also from reading your history) is that the draw of a public class is attractive to you and helps you continue. It is great to have that feeling of shared experience in class with others.

    Namaste

I am very much like you (i think) in that it is very hard for me to motivate myself to exercise at home. I like to make my home really cozy (lots of blankets, pillows, soft lighting, etc) and it is not really conducive to wanting to get up and exercise. Plus, having the structure and discipline of a class makes me more motivated. I would do all I could to try to get to the studio if I were you. I totally understand, because I am on a VERY limited income, but am trying to budget this into my life because it’s very important for me and will probably end up saving money in the long run, on medical bills, diet programs, antidepressants, plastic surgery in the future (hahahaha) because it keeps you in such good shape!

I got my hubby to bring in the electric heater from the garage and will give it a go tonight. I like the idea of making the place cozy with few cussions and candles.

I’ll try and keep saving $20 there, $20 there to try and make it to the studio at least once per fortnight. However when I had unlimited monthly membership, sometimes I couldn’t make it to the studio because of the public transport. The usual 15min trip – twice turned into more than 50minutes trip. Once I made it to the studio (5 minutes late), the other time I didn’t. And when you are really looking forward to the class, you find it flustrating when you find yourself stuck in the middle of the city on the tram, unable to move. That’s me whinging.
But I will let you know how I am doing at home. Hubby is very supporting and loves watching me when I stretch 😉
