    Hi!

I have been suffering with insomnia, bad digestion, tiredness, heart pulpitations and this lumpy bit in my throat ( which i thought was a thyroid problem but was dismissed by my GP as a stress related thing called globus hystericus). My GP wasn’t able to help at all and told me to slow down. I started doing Bikram yoga about 6 weeks ago. I have done 25 classes so far and i absolutely love it as i am much calmer and not stressed anymore. The only thing that is still troubling me is insomnia. I am under the impression that since i started yoga it has got worse. I really don’t understand why as i thought it should be the other way round. I barely sleep 3/4 hours a day and always just toss and turn. I read some of the other insomnia related threads and tried the camel pose but to no avail. I am seriously desperate as i don’t want to take any pills and contemplating whether to take a brake from yoga or to persevere and hope for better tomorrows.

Has anyone got a similar experience or some suggestion?

    Thanks a lot

    Hi Jan

    How distressing!

So, what is your daily routine?
What time do you practice yoga?
It seems you practice about 3-4 times a week. Are the classes always at the same time?
    What is your bed time?
What is your specific routine around bed time?
Do you read? Listen to anything? Take anything?
Do you shower before you get into bed?

I am sure that keeping up your practice will help. I have some ideas but please answer those questions first and add in any details you care to share.

    Thanks for your reply Gabrielle!

I am working in hospitality so that means i usually do late shifts ( occasionally morning – once a week) so i tend to practice either at 10 or 12 in the morning. I used to listen to music or read before sleep but nowadays i am usually so tired that i go straight to bed ( no shower) and hope that i will fall asleep. It seems to me that what keeps me awake is not thoughts but my body that is kind of buzzing and my heart rate goes up too.

    Thanks for any ideas

I also forgot to mention that I don’t take any medication. I tried valerian tablets for insomnia a couple of months ago but they never worked so I stopped taking them.

Insomnia is a tricky one, and especially difficult to manage if you keep irregular hours, as I presume you do. Poor thing. Nevertheles, in addition to Gabrielle’s advice you could try 5HTP by Solgar which is perfectly natural and treats anxiety, insomnia and depression! I’ve suffered from insomnia since I was a teenager and it has been very effective – combined with a fairly regulated lifestyle.

    Good luck!

I went through this too for a period… I would lye down and I could feel the inside of my body starting to get all wound up. My heart would pound and race and my head would buzz. For me this was about physical stress and a jump in cortisol levels. try breathing during the day to keep yourself calm and keep things low key for a while. the calmer and more relaxed you can stay during the day the better you will sleep when you hit the pillow. avoid VIGOROUS activities…. (just focus on the YOGA part of the bikram instead of trying get a workout in ;-P … keep it lite and breathy and just AHHHHH )

    Hi Jan

Is there a difference in ability to sleep between the days you do yoga and the days you don’t?

Can you confirm the number of classes per week?

I would start by reading a novel at night time rather than going to bed with too many thoughts, even though you are tired.

There are some great recordings you can listen to at night time that would be wonderful for helping your mind let go. Would you be willing to don some headphones and either listen to specialized music tracks or voice recordings? Perhaps we can recommend some resources.

It is interesting that you say you are very tired when you go to bed, but then it seems you could be so worried about your ‘condition’ that you HOPE you’ll fall asleep. Lots of thinking going on! I guess it’s about breaking that cycle and letting the unconscious process of falling asleep happen unhindered.

    Hi guys

thanks to all of you for your advice!

It might be just a bad habit but it’s not easy to stop thinking about it when I get into bed.
It would be dedinetely nice if you could recommend some relaxation music as I don’t have a clue abou this kind kind of music.
I am currently doing 5 classes a week and to be honest it is hard to say whether there is a difference in falling asleep between the days I do yoga and the the days I don’t.

    Thanks

Did your GP actually run thyroid tests? It sounds a lot like Graves to me.

    Hi Jan

Did your GP dismiss your concerns as stress WITHOUT testing? Because if they did then it may be worth considering changing GP.

Regardless of the cause, some kind of way to relax at night would still be useful. Relaxation is a learned skill and you may need to redevelop yours. So while you’re finding out what’s up, find yourself some recordings. You could start by finding some classical music in your collection, or some ambient music. You may have something at home. You could search the internet for meditation recordings. There are tons of those (really a massive amount). I know for a fact you can go and download some free samples of varying lengths. It is surprising how you can even think it’s not working and then wake up later with your headphones on!! 😆

So I would suggest asking your friends if you can borrow something, go the library and borrow something, download from the net. You can see how that works before going to spend money on seductive products by trialling something first. There are products out there that cost hundreds of dollars.

I just did a search for you and here is a link to a free meditation site with which I have no personal experience: Meditation Downloads.

See how you go. You can choose music or guided meditations both of which can be very powerful depending on the nature of the recording.

    Hi guys!

Thank you Gabrielle for your suggestion. I have already downloaded some ambient/relaxation music and so far it has been one night good and two nights bad again. My gp did run some tests but didn’t find anything. I also think this could be my thyroid but i thought that yoga was supposed to help and not the other way round. Something must have started moving in there and my body doesn’t like:-(

    Hi Jan

Sometimes test give false results. Positive or negative. So if you think you need to be retested then organize that.

Regarding your thyroid and fixing it with yoga: It’s very hard to say this early on in the piece. If it is your thyroid then I would certainly NOT expect it to only take a month to completely fix itself! But I wouldn’t rule it out. It COULD happen. Just don’t expect it to. You STILL need to do more investigation to keep you happy and get your mind at ease. Or you have to let it go and be patient. Only you can decide the best approach for you. You can use the same GP or a different one doesn’t matter. I am not so sure your body doesn’t like it. There could certainly be other issues. I know someone who was having a reflux problem which caused a throat issue. They were eating too late at night and lying down too soon.

Keep up the music for a while to see how your system starts to learn how to relax again. It’s great that it worked one night. Let go of the expectation that it will work every night – just ‘be’ and try to let go of your thoughts (gosh I know, sometimes that’s the hardest thing to do).

Hi cyco, I’m sorry to hear about your insomnia. I have suffered from that for quite a while and I know how debilitating it can be. I got quite desperate, and after trying many things, I have found that Reiki has helped the most. I did a level 1 Reiki course, and now practice it on myself every night just before going to bed. I have found that my jumpy thoughts have settled down significantly, and I am able to relax and sleep much better. That ability to relax has also carried over in my daily life and into my hot yoga practice.

Another thing that I did was see a holistic life coach. It turned out I had a parasite infection (yes, I know- gross, but much more common than I would have thought). I had travelled to a foreign country and gotten ill, so that’s where I think I picked it up. I got rid of the parasite, and that helped me sleep better too. The reason a parasite can cause restlessness and insomnia is because they have the opposite sleep/wake cycle to humans, and they are active at night & keep their host awake.

Just as a note – poor digestion, fatigue & heart palpitations can be symptoms of a parasite. Could be worth going to a naturopath or holistic healthcare practitioner for some ideas

Good luck! I hope you can get some sleep!
