Hi I’m very new to Bikram Yoga and would really like some advice. I’ve just completed my forth session going once once a week for the past month. The first session was possibly the hardest thing i have ever done! I felt sick, had an horrendous headache and was very dizzy. Next lesson was a lot better I still felt dizzy but all the other symptoms disappeared and when I woke up the following morning I felt on top of the world and couldn’t stop smiling!

Thing is I can’t seem to shake the dizzy feeling in any standing posture where my arms need to be above my head for any length of time, which is quite a lot of them. That plus the fact I don’t yet appear to have ANY muscles in my legs at all (they wobble like jelly as soon as I’ve completed the awkward pose) make the balancing postures almost impossible for me.

If I can only practise once a week will I be able to build, although slowly, the skills needed to get me through the standing postures without sitting them out or is the only solution to go more often?

    Hello,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Bikram Yoga! All of the things you mentioned are completely normal for beginners to experience. Dizzy, naseaus, weak leg muscles… I believe most of us experienced these same feelings in the beginning. The more often you are able to get to the hot room, especially in the beginning, the better. I would suggest at least three times a week. Still, if you cannot make it to the studio that often, you could buy Bikram’s CD & heat up a room in your home to practice.

Other things to think about… the best time to drink water is before & after class. You will find the more water you drink during class, the more naseaus you will feel. It takes almost an entire hour for your body to absorb water, so if you’re drinking a lot during class, it just sits in your stomach & causes you to feel sick. You also want to do this practice on an empty stomach. It is best to eat 2-3 hours before class.

You will soon find your leg muscles getting stronger. It will come with time and practice. Also remember that each day is different, and not to be too hard on yourself when you don’t feel as strong as you did the day before. It will be a wonderful journey for you.

    Best of luck,
    Tarah

    Once a day is perfect…
Once a week though you won’t get the benefits. It takes about 10 classes to get used to the heat an figure things out. I suggest trying to go at least 3 times a week, then you will really start to get the benefits and enjoy the process.

Thanks you so much for your messages – OK I’ve have some holiday from work coming up shortly so I’ve set myself the challenge of going 3 times a week for the at least those 2 weeks. I might post again to let you know how I get on?

I love this website by the way it’s really helped me to understand the journey ahead and everyone is so helpful even to newbies like me! Thanks again everyone 🙂

I think once or twice a week is fine for beginners. It allows you to build up your ability to handle the heat (your bodies cooling mechanism) slowly over time…the same with your lung capacity. The more you can conciously breath in class the less dizzy you will feel. So if you are a beginner and you are getting dizzy all the time try some cardio exercise outside of yoga to build lung capacity. There is no rush…and yes you will still get super benefits from even one class per week. Just think how much you sweat out during one class.
