I’m wondering what technique I should use to get my knees closer together in floor bow. The instructor says the knees should be only 6 inches apart. I am pretty flexible, so I am able to kick my legs up fairly high and rock my body forward, but my legs are always far apart (I would say probably wider than then width of my shoulders). When I look in the mirror and try to correct the problem, my legs just get wider. I’m not sure what to do or what muscles to contract.

    Hi Stephanie

I am wondering what you notice you are doing when you are adjusting. It is possible to get movement in leg alignment when you adjust your legs, but also when you adjust your shoulders.

In an ideal world your legs should go back so they are parallel. There may be 6 inches between them but it is generally more. The spirit of the dialog rather than confining yourself to a generalized measurement quoted by many is to really make sure your legs are not overly flaring out to the sides. You can try to use your inner thighs to fix your alignment. Notice what that does to your knees and then what happens to your feet.

You may try kicking until that point where you feel your legs move outward. Stop there. Then work on your alignment (the way your legs are kicking, the interplay of your muscles). It may be that your intention to get your legs as high as possible is moving your body past its ability to create the correct opening in your hips.

Interested to hear your feedback and what happens in class next.

    Namaste

I have definitely been focusing on only kicking my legs back and letting my arms get pulled back by my legs (rather than pulling my legs with my arms). I don’t really feel like my legs are that far apart or that I’m pushing too hard, but I did notice that my knees are wider apart than the dialogue says they should be. I will try what you said about keeping them parallel today in class and let you know what happens! Thanks!

Tonight in class i focused more on tightening my inner thighs to get my legs closer together and also I stopped kicking my legs up once I noticed my legs starting to splay open more. Thanks!
