    Hi Gabrielle –

    Per our Facebook discussion…

The trouble I have with Triangle pose, and most poses that involve a twist, is that many times, if I am not very careful, I come away with a rotated vertebra in my mid back or my sacroiliac joint gets askew. It takes a couple of days to recover and since Triangle pose seems to often be the culprit, I usually skip it or do a reeaaalllyyyy modified version of it (hand on thigh and no twist) that sometimes makes me say ‘why bother’? 🙂

In case I have never given the laundry list of back trouble I have: unstable sacrum (sometimes it gets jammed up, sometimes it moves around too much), bulging disks in top, middle and lower spine and osteoarthritis at T2. Nothing bad enough for drastic measures (Thank the Lord) – most of the specialists I have seen have shrugged it off and sent me to PT – but bad enough to make back pain a daily thing. I have learned over the years to modify almost everything I do when exercising. This also makes relaxing into many poses very hard because I am afraid to go too far or tweak something the wrong way. I realize I am working against myself in that regard but I am improving in that area with poses that are not quite so risky.

The good news is that arching used to be a trigger but with proper instruction I haven’t had any problems with that in quite a while (as long as I really focus on keeping my rear end tight and lifting out of the low back)…This is why Camel pose is one that I also have been skipping because it’s such an intense back bend (but that is for another forum!)… 🙂

    Blessings,

    Helen

Helen, Camel being an issue isn’t necessarily a different question! It’s all connected. How about floor bow? Do you feel any pain when kicking into your feet? Any other postures? Triangle isn’t exactly a huge spine twist, so it is strange to have pain in just that twist.

Hi David! I have only done floor bow a few times. Very carefully. And I don’t kick my legs. I more like push up really gently. The kicking motion in the poses that call for a kick out or up I modify to more of a push – or slow motion kick. In floor bow I don’t go very deep into the bend and I stop as soon as I feel pressure in the low back. Any kind of twisting is dicey. The seated twist where you cross one leg over the other and look to the back (near the end of the Bikram series) is also one I am careful with. For me, reaching one arm into the back seat of the car to get something has rendered me sore for a day. Crazy but true.

    Hi Helen

For you I would suggest thinking of the instruction PRESS. Press feet back, press knees up. Gentle is fine, just good solid effort being mindful (as you are).

I need to break down some movements for you. I will send you a PM

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂

Thank you, Gabrielle. I will do that!
