I know this is rather embarrassing, but after just 5 months of continuous practice, my costume reeks of stale sweat, especially so after I take it off post practice.

I’ve tried washing it with Dettol, and drying it under the hot hot tropical sun, but nothing seems to work.

Help please, lest I banish myself to the naughty corner in the hot room. 🙁

Air dry clothes, outside is the best..then wash in smaller loads, but w/double amount of water ratio of clothes being washed…use baking soda + regular laundry soap and whatever else you in a load of laundry ie: clorox 2…oxy clean…etc. (at least 1 cup of baking soda to each load)..

If the clothes still smell after first washing (do not put in dryer)..

(IMPORTANT: NEVER MIX BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR IN THE SAME LOAD!!!)

You can either air dry again outside…repeat wash, (but instead of baking soda) Rewash with vinegar. I prefer air drying outside 1st..seems to help take out the funky smell of the clothes…

Use 1 cup of vinegar, w/all regular laundry soap..etc. to each load..you may need to re-rinse each load to rid the smell of vinegar..but that should take out the smell…

Always let clothes air dry separately after removing…either gym clothes or other clothes..as when they are piled together…the smell from sweat or other smells from wearing them..need to air out before putting in a laundry basket/hamper…

I hope this helps..I know it can be a long process, but it’s worth not having to replace the clothes..

Also if you happen to leave a load of clothes in the washer..as I have from time to time, and they sour…air dry (outside) is best way to air dry them, rather than hanging inside to air dry…wash as instructed above…Best of luck!

I use some teatree oil with my laundry soap, and soak the clothes for a bit before agitating and rinsing. Get your things into the wash asap!

I run my yoga stuff through a rinse cycle with baking soda first. Then a full wash cycle with baking soda, soap and whatever other cloths need doing.

Another side benefit of hot yoga, I stay caught up on laundry.

    Take Care,

    Thanks all!

I am rather diligent into getting my stuff in the wash ASAP, unless it’s really crap weather [which is what I think made my favourite top reek].

When I’m finished class I just jump into the shower with what I was wearing. I let it rinse off really well before I take it off. Drain it well and soon as I get home it goes into the wash. This I have found has helped alot with that sweaty smell or even sweaty feeling. My bag does not smell, my clothes still smell fresh afterwards. I use to never rinse off in the shower and noticed my bag, clothes, towels and often my laundry room on occasions would have that sweaty smell.

The toughest part of a 30 day challenge is not the yoga but keeping up on the laundry.

Putting a half to a full cup – depending upon load size – of white vinegar in the final rinse can work major miracles. A prewash vinegar water soak might be necessary for really deeply ingrained odors.

    Hi there,

I just heard a really good tip; After washing your clothes properly and letting them dry put them into freezer and let them there for a few hours. That kills all smells!

My yogitoes towels are what reek! I wash them with arm and hammer detergent and add baking soda separately but everytime Ih ave my forehead to my shins I smell my towel! I don’t think it’s my mat, but I am going to try to give my mat a bath again to see if that helps. I’m soaking my towel in vinegar right now.

Already mentioned here, but in my case white vinegar works great: presoak your smelly stuff in water with a cup or so of white vinegar (just the cheapest you can get), then wash in your machine with another cup of white vinegar. Now, I always add a little vinegar when washing and the problem never comes back. Also make sure that you never leave the laundry in the machine when the washing cycle has finished. Hang immediately in a place where it can dry well.
Sometimes, the bacteria is in your washing machine: then it helps to wash once at a higher temperature (with laundry that can withstand higher temperatures like towels or bedsheets) every week or 2 weeks for example. Good luck!

I want to suggest you about Onzie workout clothing, They made for Hot Yoga & Bikram Yoga. They are similar to a swim-suit type of material, everything dries fast to keep bodies cool, dry, and comfortable.

    Hi everyone

We recommend to our customers that they wash the leggings they buy from us in vinegar once a month to remove the smell of stale sweat!

    Love, hugs and jellybeans!
