I have been working out, eating right, and doing hot yoga for 3 weeks (after a long break from it) and I feel great but I weigh the same as always. I am overweight. I am 5′ 6″ and weigh 190. Here is the weird thing though, I look fine. People cant believe that I weigh so much. Everyone guesses around 160. I wish I weighed 160. Anyway, my point is that I am not like the woman who wrote that she weighs 137 and is unhappy about a lack of weight loss on the scale. I dont want to be super thin. I love how I look, and like how I feel but have to face the fact that my weight is not healthy! I have done this hot yoga on and off for 11 years and got from 215 down to 190 but cant seem to loose anymore unless I cut calories down to the starvation mode and when I do that I always gain it back. Honestly, I dont get it. I eat homemade lentil soup, and sprouted grain bread and vegies and food of that sort, wholesome, vegitarian, no junk food ect… What is my body thinking? Why is hot yoga not doing what I was told it would do? I just want my heart not to be incased in fat!Sorry for being so negitive, I really am not usually like this, I am just frustrated.

    Hi Darla,

I am graduate from Gabrielle’s Teacher Training!

Hmm…I see this situation is upsetting you, I hope we can come up with something that you’ll find helpful! 😉 So what exactly makes you think that you are overweight if you love the way you look and feel great in your own body? Is it merely the numbers or you actually FEEL the need of losing weight?

You mentioned that you have been working out for a while…you didn’t describe what kind of work out that was but if it makes you gain muscles it explains why you weigh more than you ‘should’. Muscles weigh 3 times more than fat, this is why I don’t believe that merely by stepping on a scale one can measure well being and health! The more you exercise the heavier you might be from muscle gain.

A more hot yoga related question: Do you keep well hydrated? Are you making sure that after sweating the minerals out in a hot yoga class, you replenish electrolytes? These are very important aspects to maintain ideal body weight too.

Given that you live a physically active lifestyle (but even if you didn’t) starvation is a big No No! If you would like to loose more weight, then perhaps you would like to tell me about what and when you eat. There might be some changes to your diet you would consider making!

I think that’s enough questions for now 🙂

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

    Namaste,

    Andrea

Hi darla, I think you are referring to me. Our situations are similar in that we are both striving toward a healthier weight, and both using improvements in diet and Bikram yoga as our path to that goal. For me, at 5’2″ and my frame I think my “ideal” weight by some charts is even 120. So, arguable I need to lose like 15% of my body weight to be at a healthy weight. I’m not looking to be “super thin,” either.

Best of luck with your yoga and your journey to a healthy weight. It’s a struggle for so many people, I’m glad to know there is a forum where we can all support each other!
