The teacher training requirements on the Bikram Yoga web site says:

You must satisfy (A), (B) and (C) to be admitted to Teacher Training:

A: Minimum Six (6) months of regular Bikram Yoga practice at an
    affiliated studio

Students with home-practice only, contact HQ

B: Letter of Recommendation from the studio director of the affiliated
studio where you have satisfied (A) requirement

    C. Minimum 21 years of age

    ================

I certainly qualify for C. However, I am not 100% sure about A and B. I emailed Shelly and she told me I have to practice Bikram hot yoga daily for 6 months to qualify for requirement A. That to me is like a 180 challenge?

This is my 7th month of Bikram yoga and I average 3 classes per week.

From next month onwards, I will be moving from Thailand to Malaysia. I may not be able to commit to a 180 day program because I am not sure how much it costs for a unlimited monthly fee in the 2 Bikram yoga studios in Malaysia and whether it is convenient to travel to these studios daily because I would be living in a different city but same state as the 2 studios.

I may be able to delay my move to Malaysia and do a 30 day challenge in Thailand if that would allow me to qualify for A. I have a feeling that once I am in Malaysia, I wouldn’t be able to commit too long because I won’t be staying there for more than 6 months. During the 2 months of that 6 months, I will be out of action because I will have surgery over there and I need some time to heal.

This is such a dillema for me because I am planning to attend the October 2010 teacher training and I would like all the requirements done as early as possible.

    Hi Vinny

Is it not possible to ask HQ to treat your application as if you were a home practitioner given your issue with studio locations? And what about getting a letter from your current studio based on your experience up to now?

I talked to my teacher at my current Bangkok studio and he said he could write me a letter for me to a teacher at the Malaysian branch so that they can monitor my progress.

I just found out that the area I am moving to in Malaysia has a Bikram hot yoga studio about 25 km away from my new house. That means I will go to that studio for all my classes and stay put in that area as much as possible.

From March to October, I will be doing as many 30-day challenges as possible just to get myself ready for the teachers training in October. It seems like you do not need to do daily classes for a 6 month period but of course it helps if you do it almost everyday within a 6 month period. As long as your teacher thinks you are ready, he/she can write you a referral letter to attend the teachers training.

This is going to be an amazing journey for me. I will be ordering your product to help me in my practice in February when I am back in Singapore so that the item can actually arrive without any drama, unlike the corrupt and inefficent mail system in Thailand.

A “regular practice” does not necessarily mean every practicing 7 days a week…even Bikram says that you need to take one day a week off for rest; hence why you get Sundays off during training. I was only practicing 3 times a week (which to me, even now that I am a teacher, I consider a regular practice) and there was no problem going to training after 6 months of practice. As long you have a good practice and your studio director will write the required letter for you, you will be fine. Good luck!

Now that is strange indeed. I got the answer straight from Shelly, the person in charge of the teacher training registration.

Vinny – There is definitely no “daily practice” requirement. Just 6 months “regular” practice and a letter from an affiliated studio. As far as practice goes, the only person who needs to approve you for TT is your local studio owner, like you said. Some owners are really picky about who they’ll send, and other owners will send almost anybody. Don’t worry about Shelly. She’s not always reliable. And say hi to my friend Mei who teaches in Malaysia!! She just got back from teacher training, and I’m sure she’d be happy to sit down and talk with you about it. 🙂

    Best,

I guess I will just get a letter from my current studio stating how long I’ve been taking classes. I think they keep a record of almost all the classes I have been to. One of my teachers in Thailand told me I need almost daily practice for 6 months and the teacher has to “look at my body” to know whether I am ready or not. Specifically, I am not sure what they are looking for.

After taking regular classes for almost 7 months, I have noticed a difference in the way teachers teach. Some teachers just show up and talk like a robot for 90 minutes and rarely do anything to correct or guide students during or after class. Others are more helpful and talk to their students after class to give them tips on how to improve their yoga practice.
