    Hello,

I don’t know how I obtain this “injury”, but it was fairly recent, maybe within one or two weeks ago. I don’t go all the way down and wrap my elbows during this pose. I feel the pain when I bend and “sit” on the ankle. No such pain on the left, just the right. I don’t feel anything while doing other activities. I never have ankle pain before until very recently. Any idea what is wrong?

    Thanks.

    Hi Jeffrey

Hope you’re well. 4 questions to start 😉

    >> Can you tell me when you sit in the first part of this pose if you’re able to sit evenly across both ankles (spread your weight)?

    >> Or do you feel that you have to protect your right ankle?

    >> Before your ankle started hurting, how far were you going into this pose?

    >> How far are you going into this pose now that your ankle is hurting?

    Hi Gabrielle

I am able to sit in the first part evenly.

I was able to go all the way down before with some discomfort but bearable. Then early this year I feel discomfort and suspect that I tore the right lateral meniscus. It felt numb to the touch after class. From that point on I stop going all the way down. Since then the numbness disappear.

Before the ankle pain, I only go half way down. Now with the pain, I still go half way down.

    Hi Jeffrey

Would you try please sitting in a regular symmetrical kneeling position with your heels and knees and feet together please? It could be worth using this restorative position for while rather than sitting between the hips.

If you suspect that you have meniscus problems then it really is worth going to someone who can tell you what’s going on. A suspicion is not as good as a diagnosis! :cheese: Plus it’s harder to work with 😆

Still you’re having trouble with your ankle and not complaining about your knee. So it could be that damage to your knee has caused issues in your posture or normal function (eg by favouring one side) that is showing up in this pose.

Can you get some idea of true meniscus damage? Robert for example has a minor tear that limits his depth in a number of yoga poses but for him the damage is too minimal to bother with any surgical intervention.

You need to know what the issue is before we can go much further.

You may like to put your attention on your knees and ankles next few classes and tell me what exactly you feel is different in and out of class which could possibly give us more clues.

    Hi Gabrielle

I think that my suspected meniscus tear has healed itself. I don’t feel any numbness when I touch the kneecap. It is fine now.

I just try kneeing down. I don’t feel any pain. I don’t feel anything when doing the final breathing exercise. I think the pain appears when I am doing the fixed firm because I am not sitting on top of the knee. The knee is slightly pointing outward and the feet and toes pointing backward. That is when I feel something is wrong. I also feel it when doing camel. I am able to go all the way back all the time with the hand on the heel. Both pose requires the toes to point inward a little bit.

    Hi Jeffrey

I really think you need someone to work out the physical aspects of any possible damage. Menisci are made of cartilage and there are only certain types of damage that can ameliorate rather than actually heal.

It appears that keeping your legs parallel in those exercises will help. Kneel as advised and also in Camel if things hurt with knees pointing out, keep the lower legs parallel and see how that works.

Can you try that for a few classes and come back and report. And of course, make an appointment with someone to know the scoop!

    Hi Gabrielle

Did a class today. The pain is still there and noticeable during fixed firm and camel. I can’t do camel with only one hand on left heel so I skip the pose altogether. The pain was not there two weeks ago. I don’t know what have happened.

    Hi Jeffrey

You don’t need to skip Camel, you can keep your hands on your hips.

Did you try my recommendations yet, the ones in my last post? It seems you could still be doing the same thing which could be a problem.

    Hi Gabrielle

Tried your method by sitting on the leg during fixed firm. It is not quite painful but it feels weird. Now I need to bend my back further because I am sitting higher. Asked the teacher what might have happened to my ankle. She doesn’t know.

    Hi Jeffrey

Just stay seated. No going back yet. Just stay there for a couple of weeks. Make sure the tops of your feet are flat to the ground. Tell me how that feels and then we can talk about moving beyond that kneeling seated position.

Your teacher probably doesn’t know what has happened but someone professional may give you some insight. 😉 Let me know what they say

    Hi Gabrielle,

When seated, like in the final breathing exercise, it feels nothing. I think the top of the feet are flat to the ground.

    Hi Jeffrey

    You said originally:

I feel the pain when I bend and “sit” on the ankle. No such pain on the left, just the right.

so I am thinking that some restorative work on your ankle needs to happen. Hence the reason for the sitting in symmetrical close position without twisting.

You also mentioned pain and injury in your knee. So I am just taking this one step at a time. I am trying to avoid further damage and trying to diagnose.

Are you flat footed or high arched or regular?

I really do think it’s time for you to see somebody regarding past damage in that knee and what could be happening in your ankle.

Are you willing to do that?

    Namaste
