I tend to have a lack of flexibility in my hips, I’m not sure but I think it is actually the hamstrings, although I feel it right up in the hip (under the sitting bones). I just started going to yoga more often (every other day) and at first I was happy because I could feel this area stretching out and was no longer having problems with aching hips.

The problem now is that I am feeling more of a pain sensation than a stretching sensation on the right side. This happens in Hands to Feet pose but also in Standing Separate Leg Intense Stretching Pose – to a lesser extent because I can straighten my legs and it goes away. It’s also an issue in Standing Separate Leg Head To Knee Pose.

In the past I had a tendency to keep my knees bent in Standing Separate Leg Intense Stretching Pose because it was difficult for me to straighten them and because I wanted to stretch the tight muscles – I feel the stretch more with bent legs. But now I think I may have overstretched the right side, and I’m not sure what to do. I think the biggest problem is that I am afraid that I’ve hurt myself and that continuing the yoga will make it worse. It is hard to have a good practice with these thoughts in my mind!

Any suggestions? Is there any way to modify these poses or do I just have to tough it out? The pain is not excruciating, but it also doesn’t feel like normal stretching.

    Hi Diana

Thanks for the details. I think I had something quite similar. Mine was as a result of an injury in my left hamstrings. I have spoken about it in detail on this forum. The long and the short of it is that I believe you should go and see a physical therapist. It is possible that you have an injury that will respond well with massage and specific exercises to restore proper function.

I had to do something very similar with specific exercises because an injury seemed not to get better with yoga despite me taking care, stretching in ways I thought appropriate. Sometimes the yoga doesn’t fix everything and you may need someone who can prescribe some specific movements and training so that you don’t yank on your damaged tissues while practising yoga.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
