I am having pain on the inside of my knees from this pose, anyone else experienced this or have any ideas what the cause is?

    Thanxs

Knees have been on my mind a lot, especially concerning this pose. When I did it for both my doctor and my physical therapist, they were shocked and told me not to do it. I used to be really vain about my flexibility, but my knees became very sore last summer when I was doing at lot of hot yoga (and having the instructor sometimes stand on my thighs in this pose!). I’m also not to sit in half lotus at my desk, which I also did for long periods of time.

Today, I was at a particularly strict Bikram class and I tried to modify for tree (I used one washcloth behind my bent knee and held my foot with another). I understand that this style of yoga doesn’t encourage props, so I guess I shouldn’t have done it. The instructor called me out and I told him I had a sore knee. He responded that I needed to drop the washcloths and that the stretch was good for my knee (“stop looking so sad, you in the red top”).

I’m practicing knee-strengthening exercises given to me by the PT and they’ve helped a lot. I guess what I need to learn most is humility.

Oh–what I have now is patella-femoral syndrome: chondromalacia patella.

    Hi Lulu

I just would like to draw your attention to another recent post just in case you didn’t already see it: Is this pose really good for your knees?

    Hi puffybutt aka Wendy

Hmmmmm YOU have to learn humility?** Sorry, not sure that is the case here. :cheese:

Just as Suptavajrasana can twist your knees if you are susceptible for any reason, so can Tree pose. As a teacher, I want to know how your injuries are affecting you in the poses but I am not sure I would unconditionally tell you to do something that could truly be hurting you (beyond sore into the realms of pain). Some things HAVE to be modified. If you are not ‘allowed’ to make those modifications then I would suggest avoiding that pose until you have some knee rehabilitation. I would need a little more info from you about what hurts and to what extent in order to give you more than what you can find already on Tree pose posts.

**try instead learning knee stability and leg strength 😉

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂

    Hi Wendy,
I think one of the problems is Drs./Pt people etc want to give us completely different advice then our instructors – so what do we do? I’m in PT for another injury and of course he thinks I need to stop going to yoga.

My Dr thinks I tore my miniscus (inside of knee) and I’m waiting to go for an MRI to see. I was always able to go back in the pose properly and never felt any pain at all doing the pose either until it was very painful and very painful the rest of the day. Now my instructors have adviced me to just stay on my knees with my hands on the floor and heels right behind my knees. I’m testing if I can go back at all towards my heel or bring my knees together. For me its the twisting of the knee that really hurts. Have they told you to just hang out here for a while? I find it boring and I really want to do more but for me its a lesson in patience!!
