I have done 79 classes in a hardwood floor studio. I can’t say I have perfect alignment, but I have never notice my feet slip. In this studio the class does this pose by standing on the mat and towel.

Today I went to try another studio which has carpeted floor. I have a hard time balancing in this pose. Both my front and back feet keep slipping. Unlike my regular studio mentioned above, this studio practice this pose standing away from the mat and towel.

Is it my alignment that is causing my feet slip or is it because I don’t use to carpeted floor?

I talked to the teacher after class. He said I am making an excuse. I should use my muscle.

yes carpet can cause this pose to be more difficult in that department!!! we have conjure up more strength to hold our feet there in place because it can be more slippery

    Hi Jeff

You’re not making an excuse. I believe that it is possible that you are slipping on their slippery dirty carpet and others may be more used to it.

Those who are stable (particularly on slippery carpet) could be compensating for it by distributing their weight differently (more to the ‘front’ foot with or without bending the front leg more than 90 degrees, and relieving some off their ‘back’ foot).

I can’t really say for sure if you have your weight equally distributed through your feet in this pose. Can you tell me what your experience is? See if you’re able to drive the weight through your front heel and almost none in the toes themselves (pressure through base of toes is good).

    Hi Gabrielle,

Most of the time I can lower the thigh to almost 90 degree. The front has more weight than the back leg. I think the back leg is for support only. I try to have my back straight at the center as much as possible before moving the hand.

I just finished class at my regular studio. No slippage at all.

    Hi Jeff

Thanks! So that tells me that the traction you are getting from your mat and towel is compensating for your lack of equal weight distribution…

Now you have something more to work on! Let me know how you go.
