I have just started practicing Hot Yoga. I can do most of the poses with ease except afew. To me, most difficult is spine twisting. May be I don’t know the correct style. Can some comment on this?

Hi! I wonder, what do you mean by difficult? Does it hurt? Is it hard to keep your grip on your knee?
My first intuition was that if all the postures are easy, it makes sense that this one is hard. It’s the last posture in the series and it hinges on you having gotten loosened up in the all of the other postures. The previous 25 postures are opening up your body so that in the final spinal twist you have access to the most open spine possible for you on that day.
I don’t know anyone who has ever started Hot Yoga class and found the first 25 postures easy. Is it possible that you are hanging out in the other postures and not putting in all of your effort?
When I started, this posture was VERY uncomfortable for me as I had a lot of back pain and stiffness I was working through. I couldn’t hold my knee at all. I had to hold the towel. 18 months later my shoulders and ribs are almost fully turned to square the mirror and I can look straight back! If that’s the case it should get easier and more comfortable as your body opens through regular practice. As long as you’re putting effort into your postures with good technique.
Now it’s one of my favorites!
    Enjoy the journey!

Thanks you for the comment. In fact, to start with it was really difficult to grip the knee. Now I can do that with some effort but the knee then gets lifted up from the ground. Secondly the the right foot goes down to the ground and it is difficult to keep it resting on the left leg.As beginner I feel my whole body aching after the excercises. Is it normal ?

    Hi Younis

It does sound as if you’re probably making the classic mistake: For the first side with your left leg on the ground, it is very likely that you have your right heel positioned between your left knee and hip. So instead, place your heel at or just in front of your knee. Your body will naturally be less ‘wound’ up in a big twist and you’ll be able to work the twist into your spine over time with easier results. At the moment your hip is lifting off the ground and that’s giving you a hip twist and not a spinal one. See how you go!

Once again thak you Gibrielle for the guidence. I just want to know that in spine twisting pose, the heel of the leg should rest on the knee of folded leg or it can touch the ground in front of that knee. I find it more convenient to touch the ground. your openion pl.

Is hot yoga useful for BP ? Any personal /authentic experience supported by Dr’s report?

    Hi Younis

I was away, couldn’t get to the forum.

The front foot sits on the floor. You’ll get much better results that way.

    Dear Gabrielle,

At the outset I would like to thank you for the wonderful service that you are doing by way of clarifying the doubts of the students of yoga. I am a practising doctor, an Anaesthesiologist, who has been doing yoga for the past one month. I do only a few poses like Padmasana,Vajrasana,Sarvangasana,Bhujangasana and Ardh Matsyendrasana. In addition I practise Pranayama for 10 to 15 minutes too by holding my breath for 30 seconds after slow inhalation followed by slow exhalation. I am an Indian working in Saudi Arabia. It is very hot here now. For the past two weeks I have developed itching around the anus and in my perineal region (i.e. below my scrotum ). I feel as if this area has become warm. I am woken up from sleep in the middle of the night due to itching. I keep applying Zinc Oxide cream to overcome this itching and this helps to some extent. I would like to know if Ardh Matsyendrasana would increase body heat and cause this type of a problem to me or could Pranayama contribute to this. Can you please clarify. Thanks and regards. DR.Shajahan.

    Hi Doc

I could be wrong but I don’t think it’s that particular pose that causing the problem.

Did the ZnO help? Could it be something internal? Or perhaps some kind of low grade infection or irritation?

    Thanks for the compliments.

    Hi all,

I recently (10 classes) starts to feel pain during this pose. The pain happens when the left leg on the ground and the right heel positioned over and on the size of the left kneecap. The right sit bone/buttock is painful. I don’t the anatomy so it might not be the sit bone/buttock. It is around that area that hurts. The left side is less painful but it is there also. Any idea what is wrong?
