I definitely prefer instructors who call out individuals, or comment on an observation of the class as a whole. Mention something that we are ALL doing wrong and tell us how to correct it please!

I REALLY love it when an instructor takes just a minute to demonstrate even just 1 pose in between sets and slightly strays from the dialogue. In a recent class, in between the sets of the standing separate leg head to knee pose, the instructor demonstrated it and used the “angry cat” analogy to describe the curve of the spine that we are trying to make. I don’t know why, but just those 2 words made it clear as day what I SHOULD be doing in that pose. That was my best attempt at that pose ever!

Oh, and the occasional giggle in class is a real stress buster! So instructors: Don’t be afraid to say something funny every so often! Just in between sets please. 🙂

    Hi Gabrielle,

I tried what you had suggested and it did help! Perhaps I was a little too “crunched” to allow my ribs to expand? Well, at least I know what to do now. As my body improves, I’ll shift my focus to trying to get my head to touch the knees again, but for now, at least I can get into the posture and not turn purple! :cheese:

    Thanks for your assistance!

    Namaste

I will try this tomorrow! I’m going to my first class of 2013 so I will certainly give this a try. Thanks! :cheese:

    Hi Gabrielle,

I can breathe fine during the set up (grasping my heels with towel over them). I touch chin to chest and curl downwards. It’s once I am in that “curled” position (forehead to knees, top of head on floor)and begin to lift up my hips, that’s when the compression begins to really restrict my ability to breathe.

I wanted to get in a 5:30 AM class my local Bikram studio offers, so I can get my yoga in before work. Curious about how to make sure I was properly hydrated the first thing in the morning before such an early class, I sent an e-mail to Rajashree Choudury (Bikram’s wife).

She replied saying that it might serve well to have some water (or better, coconut water) as soon as I wake up. Also, to make sure I am not dehydrated before going to bed the night before and to make sure I hydrate properly AFTER class. So far, this has worked fine for me.
