in reply to: Teacher training #5435

i can appreciate the balanced, thoughtful responses above and share many of the thoughts.

i attended the bikram training myself and had the time of my life. i’ve never been a “true believer” per se, and from a philosophical point of view i tend to take what i like and leave the rest – but i can’t deny how much the yoga practice has added to my life. i considered the training a personal challenge – it’s quite intense – and i was amazed at what i learned about my practice and myself through the crucible of that experience. and as with the practice itself, i see my teaching constantly growing and evolving as i gain new awareness. i feel doubly blessed by having both the yoga practice as well as the “practice” of teaching…

    best of luck

    hi gummisteph

i know exactly why you are struggling with the triangle. i have the answer. ready? the answer is: “Because it is freakin’ hard!” 😉 that pose works every part of our body, all while demanding complete attention to the breath. another words, good times.

apart from your struggle with triangle, it sounds as if you are doing great with the series. so much so that you were asked to participate in advanced after just a month and a half.

maybe triangle will be tough for a while – sounds like you are already doing the right thing. keep working on it, but maybe let go of the judgment and expectation? you are doing great as is, even more so through this struggle. there is no “there” there…

foot cramps for me are a direct signal that i need to take electrolytes… that does the trick, and quickly.

    Such an interesting thread…

I did 3x per week my first three years, even though there seemed to be certain implicit (and explicit) pressure to go more frequently. Given everything else I had going on in my life at the time, I was more than content being a “garden variety” yogi. I certainly appreciated what the yoga brought to my life.

Something shifted in year four and I upped my schedule to 4 to 5x per week – and my practice improved immensely. I ended up going to teacher training in year 5 and today really consider it a joyful meditation – regardless of how i may be feeling class to class 😉

We all travel our own path and I really don’t believe there is a right or wrong way. My “slowga” approach wouldn’t be intense enough for some, and others’ beginner marathons may have burned me out. I think the beauty of the practice is that it can be what each of us needs it to be today, and can evolve right along with us. And that’s a wonderful thing.

a guy’s two cents: when i started, i was way too embarrassed to consider wearing anything tight fitting. i was too macho for that, thank you very much. after about three years in baggy shorts, i gathered the courage to try some of the tight yoga trunks and i’ve never looked back. sooo much more comfortable than having to deal with sweaty loose fitting clothes… of course, if anyone asks me outside of yoga if i wear those, i will deny it… 😉

As they say in my studio: It’s ok to touch someone… it’s just not ok to “feel” someone… 😉
