    Janet,
Since I have very little flexibility, each practice takes me beyond where I’ve ever been before, and my back takes an overnight’s rest to recover. Proper hydration (water, Zico, Ultima Replenisher, etc.) and one motrin before bedtime takes the edge off and lets me get the recovery I need. Good luck and keep at it!

Bonnie, Maybe it’s because I’m inside my first year of Bikram, but haven’t found much in the 90 minutes that is relaxing or peaceful meditation. Stress relieving, yes. For me, it’s been more of pressing the limit, with minimal recovery, in order to see slight improvement every other day or so. I am learning patience though. Maybe chanting would help. %-P

For me, rooms can be too hot. Also, for me, my belly often restricts my breathing in many of the compression poses, which in turn seems to reduce my capacity for tolerating heat. I tend to back off a bit on the compression poses so I can focus more on my breathing. Finding the cooler corner of the room, if there is one, can provide some relief. I think perhaps some of my/your difficulties are caused by losing focus. Keeping a positive attitude and staying in control gets me through even if I have to sit thru a standing posture set or two on occasion.

Well, ufatbasted, FWIW, I started 3 months ago, and I’m on my 3rd “massive head cold.” I don’t know if it’s seasonal/Eastern US cold weather related or if the hot yoga environment is kicking my immune system so I’m more vulnerable…I dunno…My rule of thumb is that every 3 days you miss costs you a level of training…For me, a level of training is a difference that is noticeable. 🙁 x3

in reply to: benefits of DVDs? #3899

Hmmm…I’m thinking since I can’t quite spring for the whole package (what with class expenses coming due etc. etc)that just getting the DVDs this year, and maybe the HYMC book next summer, might be a good alternative. For me, missing the classes (due to a pretty long and unpredictable work day)is much more of a problem than poor or evolving technique…And I need the “leadership structure” that the classes provide. I can use the DVDs to make up for a missed class and probably get some good instruction along the way. We’ll see how this works !!

I just found this thread…about three days late for me. Short story is that I’m fairly new to Bikram and am trying hard (too hard perhaps) to progress where I can–I’m one of those people who doesn’t fold easily, so most everything comes slowly. So I tried to push my leg folded w/ rounded back mildly strained my lower back…I’m banished for 10 days of Motrin and Meditation. So many details…
    Sigh…
