    Hey there,
The cramp you’re feeling is normal… I recently finished teacher training, and Bikram explained that it is occasionally normal for students to feel a cramp there. He suggested coming out of the pose when the cramp gets too intense & to do a slight Camel Pose to release of the cramp. I have felt the same cramp… but more towards my chest. If it’s not too intense, I am able to finish the pose and continue with the rest of class without doing the back bend to release the cramp. You are doing the pose correctly by keeping your stomach nice and tight… any forward bend you do, you want to keep a tight stomach to support your back.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello,
Camel pose is considered the most powerful pose of the series. It has you doing a very deep backward bend, which compresses the spine. It also opens up the front of the spine/chest area, which in turn, releases many emotions. It is completely normal for you to feel very emotional after this pose. Even as the pose becomes easier for you, you may continue to feel a release of emotions. It is best to acknowledge how you feel, let it pass through your body and let it go. There will also be days you might feel extremely happy after this pose, which is why it’s best to go into it with an open mind. Camel pose is proof that Bikram Yoga goes beyond a physical sense… and helps to bring spiritual and mental clarity to your life as well.

    Enjoy the journey,

    Hello,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Bikram Yoga! All of the things you mentioned are completely normal for beginners to experience. Dizzy, naseaus, weak leg muscles… I believe most of us experienced these same feelings in the beginning. The more often you are able to get to the hot room, especially in the beginning, the better. I would suggest at least three times a week. Still, if you cannot make it to the studio that often, you could buy Bikram’s CD & heat up a room in your home to practice.

Other things to think about… the best time to drink water is before & after class. You will find the more water you drink during class, the more naseaus you will feel. It takes almost an entire hour for your body to absorb water, so if you’re drinking a lot during class, it just sits in your stomach & causes you to feel sick. You also want to do this practice on an empty stomach. It is best to eat 2-3 hours before class.

You will soon find your leg muscles getting stronger. It will come with time and practice. Also remember that each day is different, and not to be too hard on yourself when you don’t feel as strong as you did the day before. It will be a wonderful journey for you.

    Best of luck,
    Tarah

    Hello,
You may be working through an old injury that you might not have even known about. Bikram Yoga brings a lot of things to the surface, whether physical, mental or emotional. There was a guy at training with me who had just torn his ACL. He was wearing a knee brace for the first few weeks of training… but one of the very last days of training, Bikram actually stood on his thighs while he was all the way down in fixed firm pose! It was incredible to see so much progress in such a short time.

My suggestion for you is to just take it easy in class and not push past any pain in the knees. Bikram always says “You can mess with the Gods, but you can’t mess with the knees!” You may know this already, but Bikram was told he would never be able to walk again (after a serious injury during weightlifting), but yoga alone healed his knee. You will want to be extra careful in class until it feels better… but I truly believe your pain will begin to diminish over time if you keep going back to the hot room.

    Best of luck,
    Tarah

    Thank you Robert!
I feel very lucky, as I am bound to have an incredible journey with Bikram Yoga. I wake up every day, excited about teaching as well as bringing my practice to higher levels. I look forward to sharing my experiences on this forum.

My camera was not working properly during training (sigh), but there are many wonderful photos posted on the teacher training site: http://www.bikramacapulco.com/gallery/

    Many thanks,

    Thanks Gabrielle,
I recently completed Bikram Yoga Teacher Training this past spring in Acapulco. I have been looking over some notes and remember Bikram saying that Cobra Pose, in particular, is beneficial to those with high blood pressure. I appreciate your help in understanding this further. I am finding out that there is so much more to learn as I begin teaching this wonderful series!

    Many thanks,
    Tarah
