    Hi Emily

You must feel disappointed to go back to what you love but for it to hurt your neck so much.

Can you please tell me what specific instruction you have been given for your neck during class?

It’s possible you have simply been told to join in class. Whatever has been going on I would need details about.

What have you been able to do? Where do you feel any twinging? Any poses where you feel a little fear or trepidation (worrying for your neck)? What poses do you feel you need help in? Why? What happens in those poses?

    Looking forward to your reply

    Hi Juneermint

May I ask you what exactly are you able to do? When you try to sit that way to what extent are you able to sit? Are your legs together? Is there pain? Where is the pain or the resistance? Are you only able to do this with your hands on the floor? When and if they’re on the floor are you able to sit upright or are you leaning forward? Where exactly do you feel the effects in the knees only and where, or in the ankles or shins?

Your mission … should you choose to accept it … is to tell me more!

    Hi Agata

I think it’s great that you are doing your research. A friend of mine who is a medical researcher (who actually exposes the gaping holes in modern medicine) highly recommends “becoming an expert in your condition”. Don’t rely SOLELY on your doctor’s knowledge. As he says “doctors can be sincere, but they can be sincerely wrong”. This is NOT – repeat NOT – a criticism of doctors but simply pointing out that knowledge can be very one sided, based on education that cannot take into account all angles of treatment, that we must take responsibility and learn to make the right decisions for ourselves… based on what we know and what we believe.

What’s relevant here is that you are shopping around. It seems quite likely for you that with the right exercises, loading of muscles and joints in your body with the right alignment and good mindful awareness that you could experience an improvement. Look around some more, ask more questions of people who have experience with it and see what resonates with you.

And I still invite you and would be grateful to hear what works for you.

    Hi Connie and Agata

This is fascinating. So if your patella is literally soft then that seems to be a very unusual problem (and would indicate to me the urgent need for professional advice). Just with quick research on the net (and thanks to you Connie) you can find that there are ways to manage and improve CMP. So that’s an easy place to start.

The complication of the softening is something you really need expert advice on which I am sure you realise that we cannot do here. As Connie implies that it’s possible that at least some of the softening is a perception of what happens when you do the kind of activity that triggers the problem. What [em]seems [/em]impossible to me (and is piquing my curiosity) is how you can have a hard patella before exercise and then find that it’s soft(er) afterward.

It would be worth really noting for your specialist what degree of change happens in what particular period of time. How much of it is perception because of the soft tissue swelling supporting the patella and how much of it is actually bony softening?

Please keep us posted, if you’re willing. 😉

    Hi Danielle

It’s hard to say. It depends on your motivation. In your post you haven’t mentioned what you want to achieve by going 2 times per week. Is it shape change, wellbeing, stress relief?

Is it that you love the yoga and can’t do without it? Could you possibly practise at home and take about an hour off your time commitment? Could you think of a way where it would be an organic way of inviting yoga into your life instead of calculating it in?

I only want you to do what works for you. So if working it out mathematically works then go for it! I can see how 3 hours (minimum) for a single class can wear thin after a while. So perhaps there’s another answer for you.

I think that it would be hard to work out what kind of pass to get when for example you haven’t experienced 4 or 5 classes per week. Some people go that many times and make the yoga their only formal exercise. You can get results with 2 classes per week. but as I asked, what results are you after?

    Hi Agata

What treatment have you had? What things do you do to manage the issue? Since it seems to be caused by function and geometry of bones and joints and force distribution, what did your physical therapist or doctor recommend for you to do?

    Hi Agata

Connie is highlighting to me that we really don’t know exactly what you mean by soft kneecaps. Are you saying the patella literally SOFTENS with exercise? I definitely need more information to even contemplate this one! 😉

If you were diagnosed 3 years ago what exactly was the diagnosis? I have never heard this problem before but knowing the nature of it may give us all some ideas.

    Hi Laurie

Welcome to the forum! Firstly it’s really important to ask you to qualify some of your comments.

    >> Have you experienced this problem from the very first classes you attended?
Or did it start sometime later?

    >> Where are you feeling stiff? Legs and lower back? Or ALL over your body? Try to get specific.

    >> When exactly does your pain start to be obvious?

    >> Can you tell me if it’s a muscular ache? You know the kind of ache you get when you rediscover your muscles after some time of inactivity or when you get introduced to moving your body in a different way? Is it like that? I seem to intuit that it’s different to that. Partly because that kind of ache disappears after only several days, particularly if you’ve been going regularly (which you appear to have been).

    >> What exactly wakes you up in the middle of the night? Is it when you turn over? Or is it pain in general? Where?

I could have other questions but if you could answer these ones first then we will know which way we’re heading!

    Hi Shawna

There are so many posts on this forum about that it was hard to locate them all. There is a search facility to locate specific (or even general) things. For example I put the word ‘food’ in the box and came up with 7 PAGES of threads. Here are a few of the results for you:

What To Eat After A Late Yoga Class, Post Yoga Drink, Best Food After Yoga and that’s just 3.

Take a look around at those and others. Follow your interest (search with the facility) and then if you need more help come back with a specific question. Someone who is new to yoga is usually more sensitive to what and when they can eat. After a while you get more tuned in and find making decisions much more easy.

    Hi Deb

I was looking for something else I found this one with the word ‘menstruation’ misspelled. It had no ‘u’ so you would likely have not found it easily.

    Menstration (sic).

    Hi Deb

I know there are other posts about menstruation on the forum. Have you discovered them yet?

They detail poses that you may want to avoid (if that feels right) and ways people deal with their practice in general.

Take a look at: Hot Yoga During Menstruation, Hot Yoga and Heavy Periods, or just put any word (such as menstrual, menstrua or period) into the search box.

Magnesium is great to take to handle cramps, hydration and electrolytes in general help. And skip a day if you need to. There is no need to power through pain and exhaust yourself.

    Hi Deb

    Are you still sore?

Where? How long does it last? Recovery might be the issue. Technique might be the issue. Lengthening your strong muscles might be.

We just need to know a bit more

Yes Bonnie is right! And what’s more turning on your mat or placing your towel at right angles is one of the ways that will also drastically minimize those terribly persistent locker-room-dirty-socks-unhygienic smells that are prevalent in carpeted studios … in the studios that strangely don’t allow a towel across the mat for the first half of class. Turning to the side (with or without a mirror) is a great way of handling the issue.

    Hi Nat

    Thanks for your post!

Hmmm. Interesting. These mesh operations are amazing and you can be back to normal activities very quickly!

Things that come to mind: I wonder what your doc or anyone concerned in your rehab (did you have any?) said to you about limitation of movement.

You may find that if you’re having pain that you want to:

    >> Ensure that you are activating your core (which is more subtle than simply sucking in your stomach). Have you attended any Pilates classes for example? One needs an automatic activation of one’s muscular corset to keep everything in check.

    >> Avoid straight back entries to things like Standing Sep Leg Intense Stretch and Hands to Feet pose. You would be far better to walk your hands down your legs or roll down carefully as you do in Sep Leg Head to Knee.

The last thing I thought I would ask you is about how much raw food and fiber you eat. Let me know the proportion of raw to cooked food you eat (as a percentage) and maybe I can offer some suggestions! Who knows? :cheese:

Can you please tell me if it’s a sore throat or if you have sore throat muscles. I was assuming the former when I read your words! It would be great to clear that up.

    Hi Theo

May I please confirm with you that you are doing Bikram yoga or perhaps another hot yoga.

Problems in knees, ankles and feet can be an issue for anything above. Actually above and below a point of pain manifestation but you did mention your some pretty hefty knee and ankle damage! hankgretchen makes a great point. It certainly wouldn’t help to check out the issue from a medical point of view.

Arthritis is certainly relieved significantly and many people keep it at bay with signs of total reversal with a regular hot yoga practice.

Can you also tell us if now that you’ve most likely attended more classes whether you still feel that hip pain with the same intensity?

    Hi Liliana

I can guarantee you’re doing something wrong that’s actually going to take a tiny adjustment to make this a very satisfying pose for you.

Tell me, when you go into Rabbit are you worried that you’re going to get this problem recurring? If you are, then I can also guarantee that the fear is creating tensions in your body in places that need to be let go of…

Sounds convoluted HOWEVER … in Rabbit it’s extremely odd but the very things that you think are going to save you from creating the problems are the very things that are going to CAUSE the problems.

    Tell me what’s going on…

And we’ll get you fixed in no time

    Hi Deb

You’ve been quite a busy gal! I woke up this morning and found all your posts. Welcome to the forum.

I notice you have 2 posts for the same subject. So I am copying and pasting your other comment here and so you’ll have menstrual cycle answers in the one place! Hope you don’t mind.

    Here’s what Deb said:

Anyone notice any differences to their menstrual cycle? My cycle has always been problematic (I won’t go into the details but my acupuncturist says my chi isn’t strong enough). I was just wondering…

    Hi Nicky

Actually I don’t have a problem with the yogitoes – on the top. I find that it if I happen to fold the towel over my heels for rabbit pose then my hands slip off the rubber knobs. So consequently I don’t ‘fold’ even if it’s very sweaty.

However, I was visiting a public studio and the teacher there requested (aka demanded) that I fold the towel over my heels even though I didn’t need to… I complied knowing I could handle it, but it still made me realise that a less experienced hot yogi might get into quite a lot of trouble and potentially seriously hurt themselves.

I am awaiting a new towel (similar to the yogitoes, but a different brand) in the mail. I plan to give you a review of it before too long!

    Hi recipegirl

It took me a while to hunt out the stuff at home but I have something here with you in mind. It was recommended highly to me by someone who had a skin problem. We bought it for someone who had a problem with their scalp. It’s totally natural and is a non-soap cleanser for face, body and hair that is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial.

It’s called Deonat Crystal Wash. I am making a recommendation to you to try it. It’s extremely inexpensive so even if you can’t find it where you live and it’s only sold in Australia it may not be too expensive to have it sent to you overseas. Here’s another link that has it even cheaper.

I am pretty sure you’ll find a vendor that will send you a bottle to try.

I hope this helps you. I hope you haven’t been itching too much in the interim while I have been looking for it! 😉
