What I have found is when I practice regularly, my body works better (47 y/o male with body beat up after 20 years in Marines)

If I miss several days, my body “hurts”

It is a great overall workout…strength and flexibility and mental discipline all rolled into one!

Consider a home practice. A couple of space heaters and a humidifier and you can start the 30 day challenge tomorrow!

I live over an hour from a studio…so mostly I go at home. Its tough…for me its easier in the room….but it is a great workout .

Welcome to Bikram Yoga! Yes, continue. 4x a week is a great start! If you keep it up for 2 months you will notice improvements in your strength, flexibility and appearance.

As for the poses, each pose, I find very difficult. Some more so than others each day…and it changes day to day. What you will find as you continue is that you will slowly improve. Now, some poses the improvement will be faster than others…and it may seem that in some your “loosing ground”. Don’t give up! Keep at it and you will slowly improve in all the poses. Even if you an not do a pose at all, just being present, aware, in the room…you get quite a bit of benefit.

    Keep it up!

Bikram says you need to go every day…the analogy he uses is its like a bank…if you go day one you get 10 credits, if you miss the next day you loose 5 credits…you get the picture.

I practice M-Sat. I’m 45 y/o male and do it not because I enjoy it (generally I do not) but for the results. Bikram says its like “brushing your teeth”…I like that analogy. I do not like to brush my teeth either but I know it helps. Same with Bikram.

Try it for one month straight…then see if you want to only do 2x / week.

I have a horrible (to me at least) hamstring problem…years of running in the Marines have really caused a problem. I was also advised by the doctor to “stop yoga”

I practice Bikram at home every day. It has not cured the problem…but it has made it a bit better…and overall it keeps me fit and happy.

I say know your limits and keep on practicing.

Also, and MRI can often tell if you have a tear (I have what appears to be a small one…but if sure feels big!)

it blows steam…at the rapid rate…the tank is perhaps 1.5L and its empty after 2.5 hours (1 hour warm up, 1.5 hours class)

I use a small “sunbeam” plug in model in my home…it works amazing! If you have a studio you may need more than one…but I purchased for less than $30

My humidifier can raise the temp 2-3 degrees…and that makes all the difference.

I think the answer is rooted in the philosophy of yoga…the idea of yoga originally was to prepare the body for the rigors of meditation…to work the body so it could stand to sit still for hours.

Bikran alludes to this is one of his books…the idea is “if you can meditate in his class…you can meditate anyplace”.

Try it…to meditate during triangle or camel…I have…for perhaps 1/2 second.

Music would distract…that is why its not part of the routine…at least for me.

    interesting.

I personally find that Bikram is MUCH more effective than any other type of yoga…I have been practicing for 5 years now…and discovered Bikram recently…and have made great strides in balance and flexibility.

I swallowed the kool-aid…and admit it may be placebo…but I can not argue with the incredible results its gotten me.

Funny, I have tried this…to “set intention” like (be calm/be positive/etc)…but I find that does not last long. So I focus on trying to remember to breath…and even that is an effort most days.

I notice i sweat at night LOTS after Bikram. I practice at night, most all nights…and have tried to limit water intake after the session which helps…but if I hydrate, I sweat at night.

I have a home practice and listen to the Bikram tape. There is a comment near the end of the floor series he had that struck me. I’ll paraphrase.

“Yoga is like a gas station…you do yoga you get more energy”

For me, while counter-intuitive, I have found it true…specifically, I have more energy since I have started my daily practice then before. Much more.

I know that Bikram recommends daily practice as well.

Not to say its easy…its not. But It’s great when its over for that day.

    Sure

We have a 10 x 10 ft room. Its upstairs in the home…that helps quite a bit. It has a wood floor (that does not help).

Before we got the patron, it was the in wall “cadet” forced air heater and a standing oil heater (1500 watt) or sometimes 2 that was needed to get the heat above 90 and that took at least an hour to an hour and a half.

Now the patron will heat to 93-4 on its own in less than an hour and if we put an oil heater in we can get to 98-99.

Insulating the window was a big help (on cold days you could feel the cold air rushing in from the window…and it is a 2x pane glass). I built a frame out of 1″ wood and pulled some cotton cloth over to make a “Japanese style cover” that works great

    The next step is Carpet

The patron is, indeed, a portable and can be hauled down to the garage when needed. But you will need to have a special plug installed and have 220v to use the heater.

Wanted to follow up on this. Picked up a patron e3 heater ( http://www.equipmentland.com/products/patron/ )…had to wire my room for 220 but it was already in the wall so it was easy. The heater works great…we put a covering over the window and can get the room up to 95 fairly quickly.

Big difference in the practice with the heat.

Funny…I found this forum in my quest to do the same…to get that “hot room”

Not sure your constraints…but I have a small room 3×3 m perhaps. I have found if I plug in two separate 1500w oil filled heaters and screen off the windows (with fabric over the glass) I can get it to 96 F! Almost there without having to make any modifications. Am thinking of a IR light above to give me that extra boost.
