I am wondering if the hands-under-neck/elbows-out technique of pranayama is the most benefitial. First of all, it seems to be dangerous to the neck. Then, I wonder how much prana you are actually moving. Then, wouldn’t the pranayama be more efficient with full arms raised and lowered- expanding the lungs much more?

    thanks

    Hi,

I could be wrong, but I thought some of the postures (like tortoise) produce the same effect as inverted asanas without the risk of neck injury.

    Could be.

What I would worry about are neck injuries during the inital breathing exercise. That is intensive moving for the delicate neck.

Thanks Gabrielle. That was an awesome post.

I remember I used to really really enjoy Kundalini Yoga. But through research it seemed to me to be pretty obvious that Yogi Bhajan (it’s founder) was just a con man. I had conflicted feelings regarding practicing Kundalini Yoga under those circumstances.

Now I am in no way calling Bikram a con man.

It seems like you have reached a very good balance between the man and the message. I admire that. You have done an excellent job.

Forgive me, I am new here, but have you ever considered tweeking (slight changes) to the system? After all, Bikram is not perfect. LOL

I guess I am under the mistaken idea that since this is a Hot Yoga site that people here would be extreme advocates of Bikram. Hence, my surprise when Bikram’s proclaimation of helping Mr Nixon was considered “Yet another unsubstantiated claim” on this board.

That’s fine. I have no opinion of Bikram one way or the other.

And it’s still all unsubstantiated. 🙂

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂

Okay, what does unsubstantiated mean? It’s not written in a book? There is no eyewitness? (Obviously you don’t take Bikram’s word for it.)

How do you declare what is substantiated and what is unsubstantiated?

This is a claim from Bikram himself.

    Thanks for the info.

I have heard that the Ranchi School for Boys was founded by Ghosh’s brother- Yogananda. However, I don’t believe Yogananda actually majored in hatha yoga. Oh, I’m sure he did some, but I think he was more interesed in his spiritual pursuits. As a matter of fact, I have never seen any photos of him doing hatha and have read little in relationship to this. The only thing I am aware of is a quote from his Autobiography of a Yoge– ” Hatha Yoga, a specialized branch of bodily postures and techniques for health and longevity. Hatha is useful, and produces spectacular physical results, but this branch of yoga is little used by yogis bent on spiritual liberation.” So I think it’s safe to say that Ghosh did not get his physical techniques from his brother.

Perhaps his Hatha Yoga derived from Swami Sivananda Saraswati, as stated in the article. Though I note Ghosh’s hatha and the current Sivananda hatha yoga appear a bit different.

Another theory may be that since it was a school for young boys, Mr Ghosh needed a very physical exercise program, which developed into his hatha yoga. Similar to Jois’ Ashtanga Yoga was geared to vigorous school boys.
