    Hi Danielle

I am not sure that what you want exists. However I am sure that doing this hot yoga will make a positive difference to you as your breathing system strengthens and grows.

What yoga are you currently practising?

Leave that one with me. If others are interested please post a reply indicating your request and we’ll see whether I should divert my attention to creating this sooner rather than later.

    Hi Larry

Amy mentions about nerves through tightness causing the tingling. This is possible! It is possible that you need more opening work in your shoulders to allay the tingling.

    My initial thought was this:

It is VERY possible that when you’re reaching forward with your arm that your shoulder is lifting up. Often this happens to get the “chin on the shoulder”. This is a hunching movement that needs to be avoided. So this could be blocking clear neural transmission.

Drop the shoulder down and back and then project your arm forward strongly. See what happens.

As for the foot. I assume you’re talking about the lifted leg! Correct me if I am wrong. Feet are notoriously tight in many people due to lack of use. It could be that there is a lot of tension in your foot. Can you tell me what ease or difficulty you have in pointing your toes? Where exactly are you feeling that cramping in your foot? Do you ever feel cramping in your calf or anywhere else?

    Have fun in your investigations.

    Hi Jeffrey

Yes, my first thought is in a knee twisting movement. So, avoid that for now in BOTH those poses. You may want to just crouch with legs together and not twist the legs for Eagle pose too (crouch knees together, and only twist the arms). First side Standing Bow just stay more upright and keep that right hip down and in alignment. If you have any doubts then there are certainly other poses where you could go less deep or avoid but for now, I don’t have enough information.

Let me know anything else that comes to mind.

Elsewhere I have talked about the restorative power of kneeling with feet and heels and knees together. That would be advisable until you know what’s going on. Do that instead of Fixed Firm and even sit like that at home on occasion.

Any more issues you should have a professional investigate it. Someone who can put their hands on it!

    Hi Elsa

Well the other thing you may not have tried is placing your feet a little apart. You can start with them about 30cm or a foot apart. Do it and see whether that gives the stability, then see if that will give you the leverage on your stretching. And then little by little you reduce the distance apart.

Let me know if that works for you

    Hi Jeffrey

Hmmm … can you tell me if you’ve only felt it today? And ONLY when you sat in Kapalbhati? What about walking now that you’ve finished your class? I think we need more information plus if it’s only just now that it’s happened you need to approach supta and tree pose with caution. And by that I mean only kneeling in fixed firm without butt between heels and for tree, I probably wouldn’t do the first side in the regular way.

Anyway, I don’t want to preempt anything or make assumptions just yet! 😉

Just use it in cooking, on salads, or even add it to water. Whatever you like! And of course, drink a lot. 😉

    Hi Donna

Well! I would recommend 1 of 2 approaches firstly using the following classes from the DVDs in the Hot Yoga MasterClass package which you own (and thank you again for that!) DVD 1: the 35 minute class; and from DVD 2, the 20 or 25 minute class.

DVD Volume 1 have classes that repeat each pose. And DVD Volume 2 are poses performed once.

    >> 1 << POSE BY POSE APPROACH.

Choose any pose from one of the 3 classes recommended. Review that particular pose from DVD Volume 1: Watch the pose; Try the pose; Read the chapter from the book. Do those steps in the order that suits you the best. Get the experience by jumping in. But make sure you’ve either watched or read of the technique first so you can avoid the pitfalls of most new students.

Don’t get caught up in getting it perfectly correct in your first experience. Watching a DVD has its pitfalls because you can’t for example watch the screen while your body is facing the screen but you’re doing a backbend. So recognise that as part of your journey of discovery.

Every day or every session, choose another pose from one of these classes. By the end of about 10 mini-sessions you could have tried all the poses for a mini-class. You can modify the progress according to your enjoyment of the process. Review one pose or 3 in a session. It’s up to you.

    >> 2 << SET CLASS APPROACH

Because you can’t always watch the TV screen while practising a class, it’s great to watch a pose chapter before doing it. It’s also another reason why choosing a class from DVD Volume 1 is great because there are 2 sets of every pose. You can watch the first set (and go through the motions even) and then give it a concerted go on the second set.

It would probably be a good idea to introduce some heat into your space. It will help you feel more agile!

When you’ve covered the poses in the class or classes you’ve chosen then you’ll feel much more comfortable to transport your knowledge to other longer classes. You’ll probably feel quite comfortable exploring the unknown with a little technique under you belt as you work your way towards longer classes. I love the 60 minute double set class btw.

Just remember, in your practice there should be no struggle, just exploration – which by the way, is that yoga is all about!

    Hope that helps

    Hi Elsa

I have a VERY busy schedule this week so I thought I would just chime in with this one detail. I’ll see if I can stop myself! 😉

I actually counsel people against coming up with a straight back like a plank. That is dangerous. I do mention that you have an engagement of the back muscles against the floor as you (albeit quicker the Coulter suggests) roll up. It’s almost imperceptible because it is a little more quickly executed. But the shoulders and back are braced against the floor lending much needed support.

Thanks for the rest of your post. I hope to get around to it later.

    Hi Cyberry

I haven’t looked online for that yet and hope to find the time to join you in your search. This pose is about a strong core and powerful upper body! Some people just find it easy to lift everything up… It can look effortless. Grrrrrrrr 😉

Keep us posted with your findings.

What has your research drawn you to in terms of heating? BTW my first studio was similar in size to yours. Anyway, it’s been 3 weeks since your post so tell me if you still have the same questions.

    Hi Jeffrey

My rule of thumb is under 99% of circumstances that if your bottom is not on the floor then you stay upright. Are you doing this both sets or just one?

All you can really do if it still bothers you is make sure you have padding or grin and bear it. Not much else besides making sure that you don’t slide your elbows on the ground and that they touch the floor and walk them backwards if they need to reposition.

    Hi Liliana

How are you going with the Pranayama exercise now? What help would you like now?

BTW: I am happy to be corrected but I am pretty sure that Amy meant for you to do that as a separate exercise and not during Pranayama.

    Hi Jackie

Would you be able to share if your friend is hypothyroid or hyperthyroid?

In my experience with my own students, I have had people make improvements with both conditions. I am sure there are many anecdotal stories out there to motivate your friend.

    Hi Nadira

Sometimes you just need to concede that you need a rest. Practising everyday is wonderful but if you’re feeling lethargic then you need to take a day or 2 off. That is yoga. Going against what your body is telling you is not being mindful or self aware.

Please, consider doing 2 less classes this week. And then try one less class per week next week. And see how you’re feeling. Then come back and report.

Of course I haven’t asked you anything about your nutrition, your electrolytes, or your emotional well being. So if there’s anything else you want to share, then please do.

    Hi Leta

Thanks for the great question. Briefly answered: There are not many who talk of bandhas in hot yoga classes – as you indicate! But that doesn’t mean that they should be ignored. As you also indicate.

Core strength and pelvic floor strength are other ways that the most well known bandhas are referred to. These are both areas that are lacking instruction. I might also add that many people who do hot yoga (even for the long term) have poor core strength. I know this from my experience teaching and also from the myriad of questions people pose about their problems.

In fact one could get through a hot yoga class (with static asanas) with minimal core engagement.

So, if you’re question is, should you incorporate bandhas (or do I)? The answer is yes. Many people don’t understand the word bandha so instructing the activity is important with or without the ‘bandha’ reference.

    Hi Mike

A very good friend of mine who has a serious issue (more difficult to treat than your issue) has decided to take her treatment into her own hands – with FANTASTIC results. And actually I am so overjoyed to share that it was I who pointed her in the right direction. The thing that struck me is that she went to see her specialist to share her findings and her system. He was noticeably peeved that she was taking that path … until the penny dropped. She pointed out that while he was doing everything she could for her, it was she who was able to take control and do it for herself. And that is something so empowering in itself!

So whatever that is, do the best thing for you. A friend of mine who is a health educator says that you should become an expert on your disease or condition and be in a position to make decisions.

So often we take the ‘expert’s’ opinion as gospel just because of their sincerity or credentials. While that can be the right way to go it may not always be so. It really pays to question and to be informed.

If you would like a few ideas then I am happy to share them via the PM system.

    Hi Shell

How’s your challenge going? It can be tough with a little one. Actually when they’re 2.5 it’s hard because they are really interacting with the world and really want their Mommy to be active with them and that can make it hard to give yourself the time to practise. That is often the hardest part of the ‘challenge’ – finding the time.

Let us know how it’s all faring and if you have any questions!

    Hi Allan

Your hands seem to be in good position. The middle of the foot is wrong. Towards the toes (under the ball) is the right place. Make sure that there is not much weight on your hands and strengthen your core.

    Hi Mike

It’s amazing isn’t it? How modern medicine can help us in some major ways. You must be grateful for a procedure which has saved your life.

And it must be a relief for you to know that you’re on the mend. No doubt your doctor(s) will be telling you to get exercise! He’ll (or she’ll) be asking you to address your diet. And most likely they’ll be prescribing drugs and you will take them and that approach works too.

For me however, doctors can’t give us all the answers to all sides of the health equations. I don’t believe in the ‘pill for every ill’ mentality. So there’ll come a time where you choose how to continue your path to vibrant health.

What you do depends on you. Are you the kind of person who will be looking for alternatives to drug therapy? Or are you the kind of person who will be following your doctor’s advice to the ‘t’? Or perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle.

As far as exercise goes I can tell you that approached with the right attitude and commitment and techniques you can do this yoga. I am positive that Googling this subject will come up with students who have recovered doing hot yoga. Of course you will have to approach your yoga with caution too! But that may actually make you a more mindful and better yoga practitioner. 😉

Partly what’s GREAT about this yoga is the ‘interval training’ approach. Pose, rest, pose, rest and so on. It’s a powerful way and perhaps the most effective way to gain CV health.

There are many concerns from the other side of the story. I would like to know your thoughts. And then because it is not my place and I am unqualified to diagnose and treat you on a forum I will happily, depending on your response, point you in the direction of best information. I have some resources that may be very interesting to you. I’m not teasing you! But I am simply asking to know what’s important to you.

    Namaste
    Gabrielle 🙂
