    Hi Gabrielle,

Tks for getting back to me …..

In fact, just like you said, sometimes these things come and go. When it first manifested itself, the pain was VERY intense, requiring modifications so there was no pressure on the joint, when my feet were under me, pressing on the ground, in wide knee child pose, etc….

It seems to have virtually disappeared. It gradually faded away, and there is only ever so slight sensitivity, no longer requiring accommodations, etc ….

Let’s hope it stays away, ….. I can live with my ugly bunion …. for now …..

…. in fact, now, when I look at my bunion …. I don’t know if it is my imagination, t could it be getting a little smaller ,….. from doing yoga …. or chg in footwear, or it’s just my imagination ….

    bye….

I am chinese and i love rice…. The standard long grain white.

I yqve a feeling we are going to hear that we should be eating some other kind of rice which has a better glycemic index….maybe brown or wild…or pwrhaps throwing in some other stuff to improve the GI of the meal……

There is always quinoa, which is a grain and i soemtimea use as a substitute for rice as a side on a dinner plate…… A little chicken stock powder for flavor helps !!!!

There is also couscous which is fast to maake this comes in regular and whole wheat i believe, so i imagine the latter is better for weight, etc……Although you did say you don’t like wheat, maybe you meant breads……

One of the most important things i was told by an instructor is to “Listen to your body”. Although the dialogue during class is one that encourages and compels you to go to your personal limit qnd beyond….., you must not push beyond comfortable stretching pain! There is no point to go so far beyond, injure youraelf and have to stop to heal or stop altogether.

As BethRSmith said it is not a competition. Every single day your body will feel different, some days you will have a breakthrough… On other days you may not have same balance, strength or energy….. Just accept it….. And keep coming back to your mat!! I am 50, and have completed a 30 day challenge, and now go about 6 times a week…..
Albeit, this is NOT Bikram, which are all 90 minute classes….. I think that is challenging just to fit it in……

Where i go it is called Moksha Yoga, and we have 90, 75, and 60 mimutes classes, as well as other classes which have more or less stretching and holding, and more or less dynamic moves (ie. Vinyasa flows)….. The variety and the different durations makes it more do-able, at least for me.

UPDATE: since my last post on this subject

I took a trial week at the chain of Moksha studios. I liked it so much, i signed up for a month AND did their 30 day challenge, in fact i am for all intents and purposes on a 60 day run…..

The floor is not carpetted, rather it is some sort of cork which is washed EVERY time, after each class. I imagine the cork would be slippery when wet, however in the Moksha series everything is done on mat/towel….. We turn to each side for any standing with spread legs or Warriors….. So most drippings are on your towel.

There is absolutely no smell, nether from the floor nor from my fellow practitioners ( well,….. Maybe the ever so occassional whiff of BO), although we usually are a quite a bit more spaced out from the other students, compared to my previous Bikram studios.

So i am guessing the carpetted flooring has more to do with the smell than the neigboring stundents. I still recall the pungent smell from my 1st Bikram class…… In the 4 months i practiced, it was ever-present, but varied in intensity.

I have been doing hot yoga for about 6 momths.

I have 3 sons 20, 17, and 15. My middle son is pretty athletic,, and has played sports all his life, including contact such at ice hockey, rugby and box lacrosse.

I took him to a karma/community class offered by my studio, and he really enjoyed it. He started bringing a couple of female friends from his high school, and they all enjoy it!

On Father’s day my studio did a “bring your father for a free yoga class, and we went together. It was 90 minutes, and the instructor really pushed us, with some new variations no-less. (i do Moksha, which has more variations and the teachers often mix things up)

When he came out, he said t was the toughest thing he had ever done in his life!!

Now i have to try and get the other two out!!!

    Hi Erica,

    Tks for reading and posting….

I haven’t been back to Bikram yet……. I think i will go back and try it just to see, but maybe only after summer has passed….. I too found it hot and hard to bear….. Always counting the poses to see where we were in the sequence.

Definitley loving the various Moksha offerings…. Did my first Moksha with music class today…….

Did a 90min Yin class last week all stretching, and holding of various poses……

Enough variety, To always keep it fresh …. And the best thing is, here in Montreal, i am lucky enough to have a Moksha studio BOTH near home and near my work, and my membership is food at either!!!

I came to Hot Yoga because I was closing in on 50, having always been athletically active (more participting in sports than working out) …. But with the ever harder to cope with baggage of a veritable lifetime of back issues … And neck issues and recent knee ligament issues…..i wanted to be able to continue ice hockey and golf…..

My chiropractor and athletic therapist had been able to keep me going, hut i needed to find something that would keep me toned and limber…. That i enjoyed doing….

I have never liked exErcising just for exercising’s sake….. I was staying in shape by doing sports, but this was bwcoming tougher as i grew older…..

I had heard aboit Hot Yoga, but the final kicker was the internet copon. That got me in the door,…… nd it has been 5 months of pretty regular practice….. First Bikram, and more recemtly Moksha….. In fact i signed up for 30 Day challenge and tomorrrow morning is Day14!!!

I am feeling great, … Can’t say weight is coming off, but shape is changing…..

in reply to: Shoulder Crunching #9589

    Hey KarmaBanana,

I also have some shoulder noises and limited range of motion.

In my csse i think it is an or series of rotator cuff injuries or built up scar tissue, as it is my throwing arm from softball. Throwing too hard when not warmed up enough in my long ago youthful ignorance ….

Besides the noise, thete is weakness….. In wind-relieving and thread the needle pulling on legs.

    Good luck with ypur practice!

    in reply to: Cardio #9575

This is an older post/thread…… So i am not sure whether i will get an answer.

I play recreational Ice Hockey, in an Oldtimer league (35yrs+). As you may know, in hockey you go in short bursts, with rest periods on the bench. Having strong legs, and being able to do close to full exertion skating for about 45 seconds followed by rest/recovery and back over the boards…..

In hockey, some guys can skate effortlessly, and others are always laboring… Exhausted by the end of their shifts…. I fall into the latter category.

I too am wondering about the cardio benefit of Hot Yoga. Certainly the stretching, back mobility, and toning is helping my game.

I don’t know alot about fitness or exercise science, but from reading these posts, Cardio seems to be measured by heart rate….

I am wondering whether the “cardio” in hot yoga (ie.the increased heart rate) is sufficient training to get me to improve my endurance in hockey – such that i can either skate for longer shifts, go all out during my shifts, and not be so exhausted by the end of my shifts?

Intuitively, i would think i would have to either do interval running or skating, or spinning … Maybe Tabata style (HIIT High Intensity Interval Training) to get better…..

I also think that simply going jogging or running, the way i see most people doing it: shuffling along in the most efficient / least movement, would not be of much benefit for hockey….

Woild love to jear from soemone who has simlar demands….

I have history of back issues and some issues with neck mobility and range of motion.

I have been seeing a chiropractor for about 10 years pretty regularly…… More often when i needed it and less often when feeling good.

Since I started Hot Yoga about 4 months ago, both back and neck feel much better, and my Chiro mentioned once … “i don’t know what you are doing… But keep doing it!!!

One thing that definitely surprised me is the extreme back bends we do in Bikram style, i would have thought would have CAUSED problems, actually seem to make me feel BETTER – verycounter-intuitive.

I am almost 50, and my back feels better than it did 20 years ago.

Interestingly, some of the stretches and exercises my Athletic Therapist (my chiropractor’s daughter!!!) gave me seem to have origins in some Yoga poses i have come to experience – especially in the Moksha style i have been doing recently.

    Peace……..

    Hi Andrea,

    Thanks for your reply…

I have only ever done Bikram, pretty regularly for about 4 months.

At my first Moksha class, the way they chain things together, and the many Downward Dogs and the planks, and the Ab work, were new to me… A little disorienting, and quite challenging. I realize that my upper body and abs needed some work.

Now, after my first week, i am a little more used to some of the different postures, etc…. Although every class is still different….. Which i LIKE.

So…… I have taken the plunge, and decided to sign-up for a 30 Day Challenge at Moksha….. I figure by the end of that, i will know if i like it.

I think the variations (Flow classes, Power, Yin Yang) will make for some interesting variety…..

I will then decide where my journey will take me….. Back to Bikram…. To see how i feel about the delivery and the consistency, etc…. Or stick with Moksha…… Or Perhaps Try another style, … Unheated, etc……. Who knows…..

I do think i will complement my Yoga practice with some other stuff which has some resistance …. TRX bodyweight suspension and / or TRX Rip….. 50 is around the corner, and i want to be in better shape than when i was 30!!

This is a very old thread…. Not sure if this is helpful….. But a couple points

I go to a chain of 3 Bikram-branded studios in Montreal, Qc, Canada and at least 2 of them have carpetting. The first-time was off-putting but, to a degree you get more used to it, and apparently they professionally clean it monthly, besides the daily air-out….it is always dry for early korning classes….. But sometimes when bsck to back classes are scheduled you have to stategically look for dry spot to set-up…..
    ……

When travelling to Ottawa, (Ontario, Canada) i looked for and found a Bikram Studio, and to my surpise it was NOT carpetted despite using the official Bikram name….. It had some sot of fake (i think) wood floating floor…. It was a little slippery, but for the usual straddle-mat poses, they interestingly asked us to all turn and stand along our mats for wide-leg poses like triangle… Sweat stayed on our towel and not too slippery on that floor…. I don’t know if this is due to flooring material being too slippery, or if they just are less dogmatic in some regards…..

Lastly, This week i am trying out a different Hot Yoga (originating in Canada) called Moksha…. Although they also have 3 studios in Montreal area, i have only been to one…and i believe it is cork….. Washed in between classes and no noticeable smell….. Noticeabply harder than having carpetting under my towel/mat but i think the hygene is a good trade……
