in reply to: Spine Twisting #10250

    Hi all,

I recently (10 classes) starts to feel pain during this pose. The pain happens when the left leg on the ground and the right heel positioned over and on the size of the left kneecap. The right sit bone/buttock is painful. I don’t the anatomy so it might not be the sit bone/buttock. It is around that area that hurts. The left side is less painful but it is there also. Any idea what is wrong?

I don’t know if I have the same problem. I notice pain during spine twisting pose. It occurs when I put my foot over and beside the other leg. Any idea?

It looks and sounds interesting. Is it machine washable? Seeing the top part is bonded to the bottom makes it harder to wash in the machine? Can it be separated? Is it a one-piece design or two pieces (top towel and bottom mat) bonded together? Is the bottom part of the mat open or close cell construction? I got tried of using studio’s mat that I recently invested in a Manduka Black Mat Pro. It is a bit heavy but with good cushion support. The only thing missing is a good towel. What towel are you using?

    Hi Gabrielle,

When seated, like in the final breathing exercise, it feels nothing. I think the top of the feet are flat to the ground.

    Hi Gabrielle

Tried your method by sitting on the leg during fixed firm. It is not quite painful but it feels weird. Now I need to bend my back further because I am sitting higher. Asked the teacher what might have happened to my ankle. She doesn’t know.

    Hi Gabrielle

Did a class today. The pain is still there and noticeable during fixed firm and camel. I can’t do camel with only one hand on left heel so I skip the pose altogether. The pain was not there two weeks ago. I don’t know what have happened.

    Hi Gabrielle

I think that my suspected meniscus tear has healed itself. I don’t feel any numbness when I touch the kneecap. It is fine now.

I just try kneeing down. I don’t feel any pain. I don’t feel anything when doing the final breathing exercise. I think the pain appears when I am doing the fixed firm because I am not sitting on top of the knee. The knee is slightly pointing outward and the feet and toes pointing backward. That is when I feel something is wrong. I also feel it when doing camel. I am able to go all the way back all the time with the hand on the heel. Both pose requires the toes to point inward a little bit.

    Hi Gabrielle

I am able to sit in the first part evenly.

I was able to go all the way down before with some discomfort but bearable. Then early this year I feel discomfort and suspect that I tore the right lateral meniscus. It felt numb to the touch after class. From that point on I stop going all the way down. Since then the numbness disappear.

Before the ankle pain, I only go half way down. Now with the pain, I still go half way down.

    Hi Gabrielle,

Thanks for the reply. It somehow went away after a few classes. I have no idea how it happened.

^ If you are committed to bikram yoga as the only form of exercise, consider doing doubles (back to back class). That is what I have been doing for 5 months now. I go only on weekends. That is equal to going 4 times a week. I tried a triple once. I could barely move after the first breathing exercise.

Lately I have noticed these two new etiquettes at my studio. It is to show respect to the teacher. Student should arrive on time, meaning to enter the yoga room before the teacher enter the room, and not to leave the room before the teacher at the end of class.

Yes if I have the choice and time permitting. I will only to go to class when my favorite teacher(s) are teaching. They guide the class with clear slow dialogue, with occasional fun jokes. They walk around the studio to correct student. My least favorite teacher(s) are those that like to talk fast, sit or stand in the front of the class for the whole class, don’t walk around to correct student, and mean.

If I have no choice and with a least favorite teacher, I go with my own pace. It is my practice, my body.

So I have been doing double on weekends for two months. I have had ups and downs. Sometimes I feel so tired in the second class that I have thoughts of quitting during class. Other times I feel great in the second class that I want to do a third class time permitted.

Now I am considing doing triples at least one day on the weekend.

How do I properly prepare for a triple back to back class? For doubles, I drink a Litre of water one hour before class. A Litre after the first class.

I notice that every time I complete doubles my ears are plugged, I can’t speak clearly. Why is that?

    Hi again,

So it has been a week since my injury. I have done three classes over the weekend. I don’t think it is getting worst, but not getting better either. It still feel sore when I poke at it. Actually I don’t know if it is pain or sore (tenderness).

I told the teacher about my condition, but they didn’t offer much help regarding how to modify poses. They just told me to go easy. So I just follow yours and Gabrielle’s advise. It works fine for most poses while I am not sure on others.

Standing bow – How can I modify this pose? My right knee used to be the strong side and I can kick a lot higher than the left side. Now I am afraid to kick at all.

Floor bow – same thing. I am afraid to kick.

Fixed firm – I am not going all the way down and my knee is much closer than my butt. I am almost sitting on it. It is as if I am doing camel here.

Toe stand – I stop doing it and do another set of Tree instead.

I am quite upset that I have this injury. From what I have read on the internet, this area of the knee will never heal on its own. It will be with me for the rest of my life.

    Thanks for the reply Robert.

I am only suspecting that I have torn meniscus based on the location and symptom I am having. The symptom seems to be a lot different from those I read on the internet. For example, I have no swelling, I can still walk comfortably without any pain. I have no sharp pain, locking, clicking, only tender to touch. Could it be something else?

I will notify my teacher of my injury and modify all poses involve twisting/bending/kicking of the knee.

I just hope that it won’t get worst than it is now.

Good that I google around, I think I have a lateral meniscus tear on my right knee as a result of twisting too much in certain bikram yoga poses. Should I continue doing yoga or stop for now. There is no swelling on the knee. I can straighten the knee, squat, lunge, walk, climb stair, run without any pain. The only time I feel something is when I touch it. It feels tender to the touch.

Robert, what poses should I modify in addition to those Gabrielle already suggests?

Here is the thread I start.

Thanks Gabrielle. I will try to go easy for now.

BTW, the soreness feels like a bruise without a darkened spot.

    Gabrielle,

I didn’t go to yoga today. It was after yesterday’s (Sunday) doubles that I feel it. Saturday’s doubles didn’t feel anything so I suspect it happened yesterday.

I don’t feel pain (soreness) at all either sitting, walking or standing. It feels normal. The only time I feel anything is when I touch it. A slight tap and I can feel the soreness. It is like when you have a fever or a cold. Your ear will feel sore to the touch. Do you know what I mean?

I don’t feel comfortable doing the regular fixed firm pose that I have been doing the modified version. Now that you mention tree pose, it might have happened while I lift my knee (heel to costume) too high and then lower the knee too low?

    Gabrielle,

I think I have bad news. Do you have any idea what could have gone wrong? The outer side of the right kneecap feel sore to the touch. It is not painful though. There is no such feeling on the left side. I first feel it when I knee down to do the final breathing exercise.

    Hi Gabrielle

During one of my doubles over the weekend, a visiting teacher pushed me to do the pose correctly. You know what, I can do it now without pain. At least not for now. Today is Tuesday and so far so good. Of course I will be careful and listen to my body every time I do the pose.

    Hi Boonie,

Nice to see you again and practice in the same class.

    Hi Gabrielle,

I will try to take longer break in between doubles if time permits.

By cleaning the studio? I only see staff cleaning at my studio.

Anyway, my studio has a wonderful membership package. Everyone in this membership starts at a flat rate. Members can work towards lowering their monthly fee by reaching a specific number of class in a year.

The link below might give you an idea.

I would say yes bikram yoga is a good cardio exercise. I can definitely feel my heart is pumping harder in the 90 minute class. Poses that involve stretching, pulling, and kicking will get the heart pumping in no time. I have heart attack in Standing Bow, Balancing Stick, Triangle, Full Locust, and Floor Bow.
